Tröegs Releases 2026 Double Perpetual IPA, an Amped-Up Version of its Iconic Year-Round IPA
Tröegs Independent Brewing is bringing back one of its bigger and bolder IPA releases, Double Perpetual IPA, giving fans of the Hershey, Pennsylvania brewery another chance to experience an amped-up version of the brewery’s iconic Perpetual IPA.
At 9.5% ABV, Double Perpetual IPA takes the familiar hop-forward character of Perpetual and pushes it into Double IPA territory. The West Coast-style ale features a substantial combination of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops, creating an assertive profile built around citrus, pine and sticky hop character.
The return of Double Perpetual IPA is particularly interesting because the beer traces its roots directly back to Tröegs’ celebrated Scratch Series, the small-batch brewing program that has helped the independent Pennsylvania brewery develop some of its most recognizable beers.
A Bigger Version of a Pennsylvania Craft Beer Favorite
Perpetual IPA has become one of Tröegs’ signature beers and is described by the brewery as the best-selling craft beer in Pennsylvania according to Circana data.
Double Perpetual takes that established recipe and turns up the intensity. The result is a 9.5% ABV Double IPA that delivers more alcohol, more hop impact, and a bigger overall flavor experience while retaining the West Coast-inspired character that defines the beer.
The hop lineup is especially important. Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra combine to create layers of citrus fruit and pine, along with the sticky, resinous hop character many craft beer fans associate with classic American IPA.
For drinkers who enjoy Perpetual IPA but want a stronger, more intense version, Double Perpetual provides a natural extension of the brand.
Double Perpetual IPA Started as a Scratch Beer
Like many Tröegs beers, Double Perpetual IPA began as an experiment.
The beer originally emerged from the brewery’s Scratch Series, eventually becoming the milestone Scratch #500. The Scratch Series was launched in 2007 to celebrate Tröegs’ tenth anniversary and has since become an important part of the brewery’s creative brewing process.
For Tröegs brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner, Scratch beers provide a way for the brewing team to experiment with ingredients, techniques, and recipes before determining whether a beer deserves a larger release.
That process was instrumental in creating Perpetual IPA itself.
As Trogner explains, Tröegs did not always brew an IPA. The arrival and growing popularity of Citra hops helped inspire the brewery to experiment with the style, eventually leading to multiple Scratch batches before the brewing team settled on the recipe that would become Perpetual IPA.
Double Perpetual therefore represents more than simply a stronger version of an established beer. It is another example of how the Scratch Series continues to influence the Tröegs beer lineup.
Where to Find Double Perpetual IPA
Tröegs Double Perpetual IPA is available on draft and in 16-ounce cans throughout the brewery’s distribution footprint.
Beer drinkers looking for Double Perpetual IPA can use the Tröegs Brew Finder to locate the beer and other current Tröegs releases in their area.
With its 9.5% ABV strength and combination of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops, Double Perpetual IPA should appeal to fans of big American IPAs, West Coast-style IPAs and Double IPAs looking for a familiar Tröegs foundation with substantially more intensity.
For Tröegs fans, the return also offers another opportunity to see how one of Pennsylvania’s best-known craft breweries continues to revisit and expand on its own brewing history.

The Official Tröegs Press Release
Here is the official announcement from Tröegs Independent Brewing:
HERSHEY, PA – Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the return of Double Perpetual IPA, an amped-up version of its iconic year-round Perpetual IPA.
The 9.5% ABV Double IPA is part of the independent, family-owned brewery’s rotating Once-a-Year series, which includes popular beers like Mad Elf, Nugget Nectar, and Nimble Giant.
Cycling through copious amounts of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops, this bigger, bolder West Coast-style ale boasts sticky notes of citrus fruit and pine.
Double Perpetual came to fruition through Tröegs’ small-batch Scratch Series, originally released as the milestone Scratch #500.
“One of the ways we share our creative process is through the Scratch Series,” says Tröegs brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner.
The Scratch Series launched in 2007 to coincide with the Tröegs’ tenth anniversary. Over the years, it has served as the springboard for potential seasonal and year-round beers, one of the first being Perpetual IPA.
“It’s hard to imagine Tröegs without Perpetual, but there was a time when we didn’t even brew an IPA. Then, Citra hops came along, so we said, ‘Why not?’”
After half a dozen Scratch batches, Trogner and his brewing team finally landed on the recipe that would become Perpetual IPA, one of Tröegs’ most recognizable beers.
Double Perpetual takes cues from Perpetual IPA, which is the best-selling craft beer in the state of Pennsylvania, according to data compiled by Circana, a leading provider of market research on consumer goods.
Double Perpetual IPA is available on draft and in 16-oz. cans across the brewery’s entire distribution footprint. Beer drinkers can find it and other beers near them using the Tröegs Brew Finder.
