Three Floyds Waking The Witch

Three Floyds is bringing back Waking The Witch, and this returning beer is getting a fresh look with new 16-ounce cans from the Munster, Indiana brewery. This is a blackened Double India Pale Ale that checks in at 8.25% ABV, and judging by the new artwork, Three Floyds is sticking with the dark, aggressive visual identity that has always made its beer packaging stand out.

I spotted the new Three Floyds Waking The Witch can artwork this morning, and it is hard to miss. The label features a red-haired witch holding a sword and shield, surrounded by twisting green serpents, dark forest imagery and electric blue lightning bolts that run across the entire design. The Three Floyds logo sits prominently above the artwork, while the beer name is displayed in large yellow lettering near the bottom.

A pretty wild package.

Three Floyds Waking The Witch is described on the can as a Blackened Double India Pale Ale, with the beer coming in at 8.25% alcohol by volume. The new packaging moves the returning Three Floyds beer into 16-ounce cans, giving it the familiar pint-sized format that craft beer drinkers have come to expect from many of the brewery’s specialty releases.

There is something about this particular label that fits Three Floyds rather well. The brewery has never been especially interested in making its beer packaging look ordinary, and its artwork has become part of the identity surrounding its releases. Dark fantasy themes, unusual characters, aggressive illustrations and memorable beer names have helped make Three Floyds cans recognizable even before somebody gets close enough to read the actual beer description.

Three Floyds Waking The Witch fits right into that tradition.

The beer itself should be especially interesting for fans of bigger American IPAs. At 8.25% ABV, this is not a session-strength IPA, and the Double India Pale Ale designation suggests a beer built around a more substantial malt and hop profile than a standard American IPA. The blackened description adds another layer of curiosity, although the brewery has not provided a complete ingredient list or detailed tasting notes with this new can image.

I would like to see the brewery share more about the recipe, particularly what separates Three Floyds Waking The Witch from its other hop-forward releases and whether this returning version follows the same formulation as previous batches. There is plenty of room for interpretation when a brewery uses a description like blackened Double IPA, and I would rather wait for Three Floyds to provide the actual details than make up a tasting profile based on the artwork.

Three Floyds has spent decades building a reputation around beers that are not afraid to have a little attitude. Its Munster, Indiana operation has become well known among American craft beer fans for bold releases, distinctive branding and an approach to brewing that has never been particularly interested in following every passing trend.

That history is part of what makes a returning beer like Three Floyds Waking The Witch worth watching. Craft beer drinkers have become accustomed to constantly changing release calendars, one-off collaborations and limited seasonal offerings, so seeing a familiar beer return in new packaging gives longtime Three Floyds fans something recognizable while also giving newer drinkers another reason to explore the brewery’s lineup.

The new 16-ounce can design also gives Three Floyds Waking The Witch a different retail presence. The artwork is detailed, colorful and immediately recognizable, with the electric blue lightning cutting across the dark green background and the witch illustration providing the central focus. It looks like a Three Floyds beer should look.

Release timing is still to come. The brewery has not provided a confirmed arrival date or distribution information with the artwork, so availability should be considered unconfirmed for now.

For the moment, what we know is straightforward: Three Floyds Waking The Witch is returning as an 8.25% ABV Blackened Double India Pale Ale, packaged in new 16-ounce cans and carrying one seriously memorable label.

Keep watching for this one. Three Floyds Waking The Witch is back.

About Three Floyds Brewing

Three Floyds Brewing is an independent-minded Midwestern craft brewery based in Munster, Indiana, known for producing aggressive, full-flavored ales and lagers that challenge conventional ideas about American craft beer. Founded in 1996 by Nick Floyd, the brewery has developed a national reputation for unusual beer names, distinctive artwork, adventurous brewing and a philosophy that can be summed up in three words: It’s Not Normal.

The story of Three Floyds Brewing began in Hammond, Indiana, where Nick Floyd started making beer with limited equipment, a small five-barrel brewing system and a determination to produce something different. The operation was modest, but the brewing ambitions were not. Early beers established a direction built around assertive hop character, unusual recipes and a willingness to make beers that did not necessarily appeal to everyone.

The brewery eventually outgrew its original Hammond location and moved to Munster, Indiana, where it established the home that would become closely associated with the Three Floyds name. The move allowed the company to expand production, develop additional beers and build a stronger relationship with craft beer drinkers throughout the Chicago area and beyond.

Three Floyds and Its Famous Craft Beer Releases

Three Floyds Brewing became particularly well known for beers such as Alpha King Pale Ale, Gumballhead American Wheat Beer and Zombie Dust Pale Ale. Each helped establish a different part of the brewery’s identity, from heavily hopped American ales to approachable wheat beers and intensely aromatic pale ales.

Zombie Dust became one of the brewery’s most recognizable releases, earning a loyal following among craft beer enthusiasts who appreciated its pronounced Citra hop character. Alpha King also became an important part of the company’s history, reflecting the brewery’s early interest in making hop-forward beer that stood apart from more traditional American pale ales.

The brewery’s reputation for bigger beers grew even further with Dreadnaught Imperial IPA, Permanent Funeral Imperial IPA and its extensive collection of specialty releases. Three Floyds has also become closely associated with Dark Lord, its massive Russian Imperial Stout, which helped establish Dark Lord Day as one of the better-known annual events in American craft beer.

Three Floyds Brewing and Distinctive Beer Artwork

One of the most recognizable elements of Three Floyds Brewing is its approach to beer packaging. The brewery has developed a visual identity that combines heavy-metal imagery, fantasy illustrations, comic-book influences, monsters, warriors and unusual characters.

Rather than treating the can or bottle as simple packaging, Three Floyds has consistently made artwork part of the overall beer experience. Its labels are frequently detailed and unconventional, giving individual releases a personality that stands apart on crowded retail shelves.

Three Floyds Waking The Witch is a good example. The returning Blackened Double India Pale Ale features a red-haired warrior-like witch holding a sword and shield, surrounded by green serpents, dark forest imagery and electric blue lightning. The striking yellow lettering and dark illustrated background are immediately recognizable as part of the Three Floyds visual tradition.

This combination of unusual beer names and memorable artwork has helped make Three Floyds releases recognizable to collectors and everyday craft beer drinkers alike.

Three Floyds Brewing’s IPA and Specialty Beer Portfolio

Although the brewery is famous for its large imperial stouts and aggressively hopped ales, Three Floyds produces a wide range of beer styles. Its portfolio has included American pale ales, traditional lagers, wheat beers, India pale ales, double IPAs, barrel-aged beers and specialty seasonal releases.

The brewery’s approach to brewing emphasizes full flavor, technical brewing practices and the use of quality ingredients from around the world. That philosophy gives its brewers room to explore different hop varieties, malt combinations, fermentation techniques and specialty ingredients.

The returning Three Floyds Waking The Witch Blackened Double IPA fits naturally into that history. At 8.25% ABV, the beer represents the brewery’s bigger IPA offerings, while its unusual blackened designation and new 16-ounce cans give the release a distinctive identity.

Three Floyds has also expanded its interests beyond traditional beer production through Three Floyds Distilling, which produces spirits including whiskey, gin, rum and aquavit.

Visiting Three Floyds Brewing in Munster, Indiana

Three Floyds Brewing is located at 9750 Indiana Parkway in Munster, Indiana, near the Illinois border and within reach of the greater Chicago region. Its brewery campus has become an important destination for craft beer enthusiasts interested in exploring the company’s beer lineup and merchandise.

The brewery’s retail operation provides an opportunity to purchase packaged beer and brewery merchandise, while availability varies by release and distribution. Specialty beers and limited releases have historically attracted considerable interest from Three Floyds fans.

For current beer releases, brewery information, retail details and company updates, visit the official Three Floyds Brewing website.

After 30 years in American craft brewing, Three Floyds continues to operate with the same unconventional attitude that helped establish its reputation in the first place. Its combination of bold brewing, memorable beer names and distinctive artwork has made the Munster brewery an important part of Midwest craft beer history, and returning releases such as Waking The Witch give longtime fans another reason to keep watching what comes out of the brewery next.

The brewery’s founding history, signature beers and 2026 anniversary information are documented on its official website.
