Toppling Goliath Adding Kung Fu Sue Black IPA
Toppling Goliath Brewing Company in Decorah, Iowa, is preparing another intriguing addition to its lineup, and this time the brewery is going dark with a brand-new Black IPA. Meet Kung Fu Sue, a 6.2% ABV Black IPA that brings together three highly sought-after hop varieties: Citra, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin.
For fans of Toppling Goliath Brewing, the arrival of Kung Fu Sue is particularly interesting because the brewery has developed a strong reputation for hop-forward beers. While Toppling Goliath is perhaps best known for its celebrated Pseudo Sue and King Sue beers, the Iowa brewery has never been afraid to explore different IPA styles, hop combinations and brewing concepts. Kung Fu Sue continues that tradition while moving into the darker end of the IPA spectrum.
At 6.2% ABV, Toppling Goliath Kung Fu Sue sits in a very approachable range for a Black IPA. The style traditionally combines the roasted or darker malt character of a dark ale with the citrus, tropical, resinous, or dank qualities associated with American IPA hops. With Citra, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops, Kung Fu Sue has an especially interesting hop combination on paper.
Citra is widely associated with intense citrus and tropical-fruit character, while Mosaic can contribute layers of tropical fruit, berry, citrus and other complex hop notes. Nelson Sauvin brings a distinctive New Zealand hop character that can add white-grape, gooseberry, tropical fruit and wine-like qualities. Together, those three hops could give Kung Fu Sue a complex and expressive hop profile that contrasts nicely with its darker appearance.
The new Toppling Goliath Black IPA will be packaged in 16-ounce cans, continuing the brewery’s familiar tallboy format for many of its specialty and limited-release beers. The 16-ounce can also gives beer drinkers plenty of room to experience the combination of dark malt character and modern American and New Zealand hop varieties.
Kung Fu Sue is another example of Toppling Goliath Brewing’s willingness to move beyond a single beer style. From hazy IPAs and Double IPAs to lagers, pale ales, barrel-aged stouts and specialty releases, the Decorah brewery maintains a constantly changing portfolio that keeps craft beer fans watching for what’s next.
At this point, Toppling Goliath Kung Fu Sue Black IPA is an upcoming release, so beer drinkers will need to stay tuned for official release information, distribution details, and tasting notes. Once the beer reaches the market, MyBeerBuzz will have more information on where to find this new 6.2% ABV Black IPA in 16-ounce cans.
With Citra, Mosaic, and Nelson Sauvin hops packed into a dark IPA framework, Kung Fu Sue could be one of the more interesting Toppling Goliath releases to watch for.
