Staying Healthy In Non-Traditional Ways–Your Person And Your Home

As the child of a 1950’s-trained nurse mother, I can tell you my vision of healthcare was rooted in her nursing training.  Her values were really traditional and her healthcare was what I considered safe and smart.  It’s hard to argue with penicillin, mercurochrome and band-aids, but if you jump forward 50-years, the playing field has chanced quite a bit.

We now find TV commercials that advertise pharmaceuticals like candy, on an hourly basis.  A healthcare system that was based on actual health, is now based on much more than that.  Profit-driven health insurance, healthcare and pharmaceuticals now rule the day and serve to cloud our choices more and more.

Jump forward to my adult life, and I’m now married to a woman who has the exact opposite experience to mine.  Her choices begin with non-traditional but very historical healthcare options.  I still remember her first recommendation of acupuncture and how I first reacted, but even that has changed.  I’ve now not only experienced success with non-traditional options and you can too.

After a shoulder injury stopped my exercise routine cold in it’s tracks, and traditional medicine left me with anti-inflammatory and pain killers, I decided to give something else a shot.   I eased into non-traditional medicine courtesy of an unlikely provider.  My GP or general practitioner doctor actually recommended physical therapy and that physical therapy lead to cupping.

If you’re not familiar, cupping is a massage-based technique that involves the use of various sized suction cups.  These cups allowed my physical therapist to attach the cups to various areas of my back and shoulders, and use those cups as a handle to stretch my skin and muscle.  This movement and cupping massage really helped me relax and ultimately heal my shoulder injury without the use of medication.

Cupping opened the door and my mind to alternative therapies.  On a subsequent back injury, I again started with cupping and ultimately deep heated massage from a chiropractor.  Faced with the choice of more meds, the chiropractor was not only a healing experience, but a pleasant experience as well.  The procedure I used started with a heated thermal blanket.  This loosened my muscles and back and really helped make the massage and adjustment that followed very effective.
