Long about the first week of June or so I start the interview process.  The perfect candidate has to be easy going, fun to work with, a great team player and a hard worker.  Of course I’m talking about the interviews to choose my summer beer, and I think todays beer has an inside line at the job.

Today’s applicant comes to us from Smuttynose Brewing in Hampton, NH and it’s called Summer IPA.  This is their 2017 summer seasonal release and it is available now in 12oz bottles, cans and on draft.  This Hatchling Series-based beer was developed at the Smuttlabs R&D division to be a sessionable and satisfying IPA; so lets see if they hit the mark.

Named for one of my favorite beer-seasons, Smuttynose Summer IPA has “summer” written all over it.  From the sunny gold color to the bright citrus aromas, Summer IPA will demand you take it to the beach.  The flavors follow with lots of tropical fruits, citrus and hops, hops, hops.  Summer IPA uses Citra, Saphir, Amarillo and Zeus hops to maintain a really nice hop-forward balance with a satisfying malt presence and a clean crisp finish.  Smuttynose was aiming to create an IPA perfect for a summer day, and I’d say they did just that.  The beer hits a sessionable 5%-AbV with a hoppier-than-expected 25 IBU.  Overall this is a really satisfying, drinkable and hoppy summer IPA, so if you’re interviewing candidates for your 2017 summer beer, this is a beer you need to talk to.
