Lammsbräu Pure Lager – The Future Of Gluten-Free Beer – First Sampling

A few weeks ago I brought you the first look at a new gluten-free beer called Lammsbräu Pure Lager.  This Pilsner comes to us from Germany and it is “handcrafted to remove gluten.”  This beer is brewed with mineral water, organic barley malt, organic hops and yeast and it is endorsed by the German Celiac Society.

According to St. Killian Importing, “

This organic, vegan, gluten-removed beer will change the way that American drinkers think about gluten-free beers”…so you have to be wondering like I was…how does it taste.

I’ve sampled a lot of Gluten Free beers, including those that use sorghum and buckwheat, and even those that remove the gluten as part of the brewing process.  I’ve found a mix of some really classic brews and some that have unexpected flavors.  I’m happy to report that Lammsbräu really did a nice job with Pure Lager.  The color is golden, the aromas are somewhat yeasty and grainy/earthy and the mouthfeel is lighter and more carbonated.  The beer tastes a lot like a traditional German lager, but the presence of hops definitely leans it toward a lower hopped Pilsner style.  The finish is dry and clean and at 4.7% ABV it’s pretty easy drinking….so be sure to try it for yourself whether you are gluten-intolerant or not.
