It’s Never Too Late For PreMarital Counseling

Who could have ever imagined what the world would be like today in these challenging times of living with Covid-19. A year ago, or even a few months ago, most of us couldn’t have imagined a virus of this magnitude let alone the conditions under which we now live.

Our lives have taken such a drastic change in such a short period of time. Many of us are working from home, doing our best to figure out how to use distance technology to communicate with our coworkers. We’re home-schooling our kids and setting up our kitchens as classrooms. We’re spending 24 hours a day with our spouses, and we’re missing our social lives with friends.

Such drastic changes can take a toll on our mental, emotional, and spiritual well being as we struggle to figure out how to handle all of these changes at once, and we might even be finding ourselves being impatient with those we love the most and especially with those closest to us such as our spouses.

While it is truly understandable why we might be impatient, keeping an open channel of communication about our feelings and sharing our thoughts (both good and bad) with those with whom we are quarantining, especially our spouses or fiancés, is crucial.

But it has been shown that drastic changes or shifts in our lives (such as receiving a life-changing diagnosis, divorce, death of a loved one, or any life-changing situation such as Covid-19) can actually have a negative impact on our closest relationships, including marriage.

When I was engaged to be married, I didn’t think there was anything that could come between me and my spouse. But over the years there have been some big challenges that we weren’t completely prepared for, Covid-19 being one of them.

It wasn’t until I saw one of my engaged friend’s go through premarital counseling that I realized how beneficial that would have been for us. There were times when I truly wish we had sought out the guidance of someone before getting married who could have given us a roadmap about what to expect and maybe even given us some tools for getting to know each other’s emotional and communication styles.

But then I learned that married couples can do premarital counseling as well and can rekindle that love that brought them together in the first place. I’ve also found a great tool for those who feel like they need guidance through troubled times such as Covid-19; and it is called ReGain.
