Today I have a look at an interesting new addition to the Space Camper IPA lineup from Boulevard Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri. This one is called Space Camper The Legend of Elle Dorado, and it takes the brewery’s popular cosmic beer series in another hop-forward direction.

According to the newly revealed packaging, The Legend of Elle Dorado is a 5.7% ABV Comet Hop Hazy IPA. The beer is packaged in 12-ounce cans, making it another relatively accessible addition to Boulevard’s growing Space Camper lineup.

The label specifically identifies the beer as a Comet hop hazy IPA. While the name “Elle Dorado” certainly plays with the familiar name of El Dorado hops, the label itself does not provide an ingredient list confirming that El Dorado hops are actually used in the recipe. For now, the safest description is the one Boulevard puts directly on the package: Comet Hop Hazy IPA.

The new beer also gets one of the more visually distinctive Space Camper packages to date. The artwork features a retro-futuristic woman in a white space suit, a small robotic companion and a colorful extraterrestrial landscape filled with green and purple accents. The words “The Legend of Elle Dorado” dominate the lower portion of the package.

That artwork fits perfectly with the broader Space Camper concept. Boulevard’s Space Camper collection is built around adventurous, hop-forward beers and a playful science-fiction identity. The brewery says the Space Camper series offers hop lovers an “exhilarating ride” through flavor and brewing innovation.

The original Space Camper Cosmic IPA remains the foundation of the series. Boulevard describes that beer as a juicy IPA bursting with tropical fruit flavors and citrus aromas, with large hop additions designed to emphasize aroma and flavor while minimizing upfront bitterness.

The Space Camper family has continued expanding with multiple variations, including previous releases covered here at MyBeerBuzz. Boulevard has also used the brand for collaborations, specialty releases and other themed IPA projects.

The new Space Camper The Legend of Elle Dorado appears ready to continue that tradition while offering beer drinkers another hazy IPA option at a very approachable 5.7% ABV. The Comet hop designation should immediately attract hop fans looking for something different from the standard Space Camper Cosmic IPA.

At this point, release timing, distribution information and detailed tasting notes have not been announced, so stay tuned to MyBeerBuzz for additional information as Boulevard prepares this new Space Camper beer for release.

Boulevard Brewing Company is a landmark Kansas City, Missouri craft brewery with a history stretching back to 1989. Founded by John McDonald, Boulevard was created with a straightforward but ambitious goal: bring distinctive, flavorful craft beer back to Kansas City while combining traditional brewing techniques with modern innovation. More than three decades later, Boulevard has grown into the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest while maintaining its identity as a Kansas City-born brewery.

The Boulevard Brewing story began when McDonald became fascinated by European brewing traditions during a trip to France in the 1980s. After returning home, he began experimenting with homebrewing and eventually transformed a historic railroad facility on Southwest Boulevard into a working brewery. On November 17, 1989, Boulevard delivered its first keg of Pale Ale to a Kansas City restaurant, officially launching the brewery.

Boulevard quickly became known for producing flavorful, distinctive beers that stood apart from the mass-market beer available at the time. Early releases included Pale Ale, Unfiltered Wheat Beer and seasonal specialties. The brewery’s Unfiltered Wheat Beer became an especially important part of the Boulevard portfolio, helping establish the brewery throughout Kansas City and the broader Midwest craft beer market. Expansion eventually brought a much larger brewhouse and allowed Boulevard’s brewing team to develop increasingly ambitious beers, including the award-winning Smokestack Series and Tank 7 American Saison.

Today, Boulevard Brewing Company’s beer lineup encompasses a remarkably broad range of craft beer styles, including wheat beers, pale ales, saisons, barrel-aged beers, specialty releases, IPAs and innovative seasonal beers. One of its most recognizable modern brands is Space Camper, an adventurous IPA series that launched in 2019. The Space Camper family has developed into a collection of imaginative, hop-forward beers built around a distinctive science-fiction-inspired identity.

The flagship Space Camper Cosmic IPA uses substantial hop additions late in the brewing process and during fermentation to emphasize tropical fruit, citrus and juicy hop character while limiting upfront bitterness. Boulevard currently lists Cosmic IPA at 5.9% ABV and 40 IBUs.

That Space Camper tradition is particularly relevant to Space Camper The Legend of Elle Dorado, the new 5.7% ABV Comet Hop Hazy IPA featured in this article. The new beer expands Boulevard’s Space Camper IPA universe with another colorful package and another hop-focused interpretation of the series. Boulevard’s official Space Camper collection includes beers such as Fundamental Evil, Star Striker and Crater Raider.

Boulevard also places significant emphasis on sustainability. The brewery began its zero-landfill initiative in 2010 and removed its final dumpster from the main brewing facility in 2011. Boulevard has also invested in solar power, recyclable packaging, a green roof and other environmental programs designed to reduce its environmental footprint.

Visitors can experience Boulevard beer firsthand at the brewery’s Kansas City campus, which includes the Tours & Recreation Center, brewery tours, tastings, a gift shop and the Boulevard Beer Hall. The Beer Hall offers a broad selection of Boulevard beers and beverages alongside food and views of Kansas City.

Boulevard’s combination of Kansas City brewing heritage, craft beer innovation, hop-forward IPA experimentation, sustainability and distinctive beer packaging has helped make it one of the most recognizable breweries in the Midwest. From the original Boulevard Pale Ale to Unfiltered Wheat Beer, Tank 7 and the ever-expanding Space Camper IPA saga, the brewery continues to follow founder John McDonald’s original philosophy of doing something different.
