Weyerbacher Donates Proceeds From Althea

In late September, Weyerbacher debuted a new beer called Althea. The mission of this beer was to raise money to assist Lehigh Valley Area breast cancer patients through the Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund of Lehigh Valley Health Network. Qualifying patients of the program can receive funds to assist with treatment related non-medical expenses which could interfere with their continued treatment and recovery.

One dollar from the sale of each bottle of Althea was donated to this fund—a grand total of $12,336!  In mid-November, Weyerbacher invited LVHN to the brewery to receive the funds generated from the sales of Althea.

“We produced just over 1000 cases of Althea and we were amazed at how quickly those cases were distributed,” said Dan Weirback, President of Weyerbacher Brewing Company.

“We are going to be able to help dozens to over a hundred people with these funds, ” said Keith Weinhold, Senior VP for LVHN Operations. Mr. Weinhold explained that is not just the patients who benefit as their families and support networks feel the effects of the financial assistance provided by this program.

“These funds help us provide support to cancer patients faced with non-medical, non-reimbursable expenses,” says Susan Steigerwalt, program director for LVHN’s Breast Health Services. “We cover items like food, utility bills, wigs, prostheses, and costs such as housekeeping or babysitting services.”

Althea will be brewed again for October 2014! “We’re proud of the work our brewers do and gratified the community supported our dream to help cancer patients,” Weirback said.
