Stone Ruination Double IPA Returns in 12-Ounce Cans

I brought you the news earlier this year that Stone Ruination IPA was returning as part of Stone Brewing’s 30th Anniversary celebration. Now, there is even more reason for longtime hopheads to pay attention: it appears Stone Ruination Double IPA is coming back in a new 12-ounce can format and may remain in the Stone lineup beyond the anniversary celebration.

That is significant because Ruination IPA isn’t simply another Stone beer. It is one of the beers that helped establish Stone Brewing’s reputation for aggressively hopped, unapologetically bitter West Coast IPAs. Stone describes Ruination as the first year-round, brewed-and-bottled West Coast Double IPA, a beer that helped define what the modern West Coast DIPA could be. Stone’s current beer information lists Ruination IPA at 8.2% ABV and more than 100 IBUs, with Magnum, Chinook and Centennial hops contributing intense resinous, piney, and citrus-forward character.

The new packaging shown here is particularly interesting. The Stone Ruination IPA 12-ounce can retains the familiar Stone gargoyle artwork while putting the words “RUINATION IPA” front and center. The can identifies the beer as a Double India Pale Ale at 8.2% alcohol by volume, giving fans the unmistakable profile of an old-school West Coast Double IPA in a more contemporary package.

A West Coast Double IPA Built for Hopheads

Ruination’s importance to Stone Brewing’s history cannot be overstated. The beer dates to 2002 and became a benchmark for the brewery’s massive-hop philosophy. Previous Stone materials have described the beer as a quintessential West Coast Double IPA, while Stone’s current product information highlights a deep golden appearance, pine and resin aromas, citrus-like fruit character, medium-full body, and an intense, lingering bitterness.

The 2026 return is also part of a much larger Stone Brewing nostalgia campaign. Stone announced that its 30th Anniversary year would feature fan-favorite throwbacks, collaborations, limited packaging and classic beers, including the return of Ruination IPA, RuinTen Triple IPA and Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA.

That makes Ruination particularly interesting. If the beer continues beyond the anniversary celebration, this could be more than a one-time nostalgic rebrew. It could represent the return of one of Stone’s most historically important IPAs to regular availability in a modern 12-ounce can package.
