I’ve always had very fond memories of enjoying a pint of Guinness on the southwest coast of Ireland; and while my first pint in country was far from my last pint or last visit to Ireland, the beer always conjures up very happy memories for me.

I’m also an avid home baker, so when I heard that Guinness is putting out The Official Guinness Cookbook Set, I couldn’t wait to check it out. The gift set includes not only a cookbook, but a cool Guinness logo apron; and the recipes feature classic Guinness Draught, crisp Extra Stout, bittersweet Foreign Extra Stout, citrusy Baltimore Blonde, and more. The recipes come from St. James Gate in Dublin as well as the Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore, MD and they cover a variety of foods from dinners to dessert.

The book has over 70-recipes and they all look tasty. I should also mention how great and enticing the photography looks and what a high-quality book this is. The Guinness logo’d chef’s apron is not only sturdy and comfortable, but it also simply just looks cool with the logo and lettering on the heavy canvas.

I couldn’t resist putting on the Guinness apron and taking a crack at the Irish Soda bread recipe….so of course I did it. The instructions were easy to follow, and more importantly, the ingredients were easy to find. The soda bread came out very close to the soda breads I remember from Ireland and the flavor and texture with Guinness on-board were really good. I followed the soda bread with cheesecake brownies and the resulting treats didn’t last 5-minutes at work in the break room. They were easy to make, full of flavor (again with Guinness on-board) and the texture was soft, moist and creamy.

I plan to follow up and try a few more recipes as I get the ingredients and enjoy more of what the book has to offer. Be sure to get out there and try out the book and apron for yourself…and when you do try it, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
