We haven’t even hit the holidays, let alone early Feb, but in the beer world, it’s never too early to start looking for your shadow and start celebrating Groundhog’s Day.  And while we can’t predict 6 more weeks of winter, we can predict you may want to enjoy 6 more bottles of this beer.

Of course we’re talking about Straub Groundhog Altbier and yes the beer has been released for the 2016-2017 season.  2016 marks the 5th year that Straub has released this winter seasonal and this limited-release beer remains an Altbier.  If you’re unfamiliar with the style, it is a traditional and historical German ale (yes an ale) that predates the popularity of lagers in German brewing.

Straub Groundhog Altbier pours a deep copper color with roasty and caramel aromas.  This beer has flavors that lead with malty sweetness with some earthy and herbal hop flavors to balance it all out.  I found some nutty and bready flavors as well, bit the rich malty backbone really dominates the flavors.  The beer finishes with slight caramel sweetness and some grassy hop notes.
