We’ve been excited to try out a new beer from Smuttynose since we first published a peek back in early Feb.  The beer is called Pinniped Special and as you can see on the label, it’s a “fine Vienna-style lager.”

If that wasn’t enough summer fun, Smuttynose also just announced even more good news.  Pinniped Special is going year-round.  Smuttynose calls it “the beer you always wanted, but didn’t know how to ask for” and I think you’ll agree when you try one.  This beer uses uses classic Vienna-style American and German ingredients and techniques and it will hit a sessionable 5.1%-AbV…so how does it taste?

Named for “carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine animals” Pinniped Special pours a light and rich copper color.  The aromas lead with malty and caramel sweetness and finish with toasted biscuit aromas.  The mouthfeel is smooth and soft and the flavors have a nice balanced combination of malty caramel sweetness with a drinkable and clean hop finish.  Even with the malty sweet lead, the beer actually finishes dry and satisfying…and as Smuttynose imagined, I can see this beer being the perfect summer brew and a really satisfying winter brew as well.

Pinniped Special uses a traditional German decoction mash and it will be packaged in 12oz bottles (6-packs & 12-packs) as well as kegs; and it is available now so get out there and try it.  And when you do sample one, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
