Blue Ox Malthouse is a malthouse in Lisbon Falls, Maine, founded in 2013 by Joel Alex to support Maine’s agricultural and craft beer industries. It is the largest traditional floor malting facility in the world outside of Europe and uses centuries-old methods to produce malted grains for beers, spirits, and baking. The company focuses on strengthening local supply chains, supporting sustainable farming, and connecting local farmers with brewers and distillers.
Founded: In 2013 by Joel Alex, it was Maine’s first commercial malthouse, established to bridge the gap between local grain growers and craft brewers.
Method: The company specializes in traditional, labor-intensive floor malting, a technique also used in Scotland and Europe.
Mission: To support Maine’s agriculture and economy by creating high-quality, locally sourced malt, which in turn helps local family farms thrive and keeps money within the community.
Products: Blue Ox produces a variety of base and specialty malts from grains like barley, wheat, rye, and triticale, and has recently expanded to include roasted and smoked malts.
Impact: By providing a local market for regional grains, Blue Ox Malthouse helps build a more resilient regional grain economy and has become a key supplier for breweries across the Northeast, including notable ones like Maine Beer Company.
Expansion: The facility has undergone significant expansion, quadrupling its floor malting capacity and adding new equipment, to become the world’s largest traditional floor malthouse outside of Europe.
