I hold in my hand the first new fall seasonal introduction since 1989 from Harpoon Brewery.  Say that a few times slowly and you’ll realize just how special this new fall seasonal beer is.

This is Harpoon Flannel Friday and it is a hoppy, malty and crisp amber ale.  This beer is named for when Harpoon employees noted that they knew fall was coming when more and more employees came to work in flannel.  In honor of this tradition, Harpoon started Flannel Friday where “Harpooners” wear flannel to work on Fridays…thus the perfect name for the new Harpoon fall seasonal, Flannel Friday.

This beer isn’t your traditional fall seasonal and it’s definitely not your typical amber ale.  Flannel Friday pours a rich reddish amber color with loads of citrus and malty caramel in the nose.  Due in part to the addition of Citra and Cascade hops, this beer strikes a decidedly hoppy take on a traditional malty fall amber ale….and as a hop lover I consider that to be a good thing.  There’s definitely a dominant malty thread to the flavors in this beer, but I really liked how the resinous and citrusy hops really balanced it all out and cleaned up the finish.  You won’t mistake Flannel Friday for an IPA, but you also won’t mistake it for a sweet malty amber ale. 

As a side note, we did try this beer on a late summer (pretty warm) evening.  I also can’t wait to try this beer again as our fall nights actually turn colder…so stay tuned on that one.

Harpoon Flannel Friday will be available in Sept and Oct in 12oz cans (and bottles) and on draft; so no, this beer won’t get in the way of your Oktoberfest celebrations (and drinking).  The beer hits 5.7%-AbV and 35 IBU so I think you’ll find it as drinkable as I did.  Try Harpoon Flannel Friday f
