Upland Sour Ales Heading To Boston

In May, we opened the Wood Shop—a dedicated wood-aged sour ale brewery, allowing our brewers to continue innovating with new beers, blends, and ingredients. While the lottery and Secret Barrel Society side of our sours program is not changing, the expansion has allowed us to bring some new American sours to new markets—beginning with Boston. 

“We decided to start with Boston because it’s a great city with an exciting beer scene, & we’ve developed a strong partnership with Massachusetts Beer Alliance,” said Dusty Howe, Upland’s Sour Beer Brand Manager.

The fist sours to travel from our Bloomington home to the Atlantic coastline are Hopsynth, with a distinct flavor profile of fresh hops and tartness, and Revive—a tart, tropical ale aged with pineapple and chamomile. Both will be available in 500ml bottles and ⅙ bbl kegs along with other limited kegs of sour ales.

Since 2006, we’ve been concocting bold recipes with unexpected ingredients within the sour beer craft, leading to award-winning brews as well as a loyal following from our online lottery and Secret Barrel Society.

“We started our sour program ten years ago, trying to emulate the great Belgian sours that we loved,” said Upland’s President Doug Dayhoff. “The success of our online lottery and Secret Barrel Society proves that craft beer devotees are interested in new experiences, but not in a faddish way. With the Wood Shop expansion, we’re still giving our longtime fans access to exclusive small batches while introducing some of our sour beers to those who have not previously had access.”   

Hopsynth and Revive will be available in select bottle shops and bars in Boston and throughout Massachusetts, in addition to the Midwest.

Monday, November 28 at 6pm: Branch Line restaurant

Boston Magazine’s #BestofBoston2016 Best Beer Program winner, Branch Line, will be hosting us with a “Wood Shop x Art Studio” theme.

Branch Line will be featuring Kiwi Lambic, Prim, Raspberry Lambic, and Revive – and also featuring artwork from local artists. Brewing a traditional wood-aged sour beer is both a science and an art, and the first 50 attendees will also receive a poster featuring Upland label artist Michael Cina’s Revive artwork!

Wednesday, November 30 at 6pm: The Tin Tap Room

We’ll be joined by our friends at Revolution Brewing, Rhinegeist, and Boulevard Brewing Co. to enjoy these tasty brews.
