Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Short’s Melt My Brain Summer Seasonal

This evening we’re getting a chance to try an early sample of the new 2017 summer seasonal coming from Short’s…and while the name of the beer and the AbV may seem to convey a mixed message, the taste will bring you a mixed message in a good way.

Short’s Melt My Brain was the silver medal winner in the Experimental Beer category at GABF 2015 and it is loosely based on a Gin & Tonic cocktail (G&T).  The beer is a golden ale brewed with juniper berries, coriander, limes and tonic water (yes actual tonic water).  The idea was to create the tasting experience of a Gin & Tonic, but in a beer.  So how did they do? 

Melt My Brain pours a semi-clear straw/golden color with lots of citrus and juniper aromas.  The lime aromas become more prominent in the second whiff with a subtle spicy character at the end.  The flavors begin with a very dominant lime flavor and a coriander piney resinous finish.  The mouthfeel is decidedly effervescent thanks to the tonic water and the beer finishes refreshing, drinkable and bright.  I’m far from a G&T expert, but I recognized a lot of the same juniper, and lime flavors I remember from the cocktail. In the end we really enjoyed the beer and I liked the interesting play on tart and sweet flavors you experience as you drink it.
