Using a bong is much different from using a pipe, and although using a bong doesn’t look extremely difficult, beginners do often experience trouble trying to operate it for their first time. There is a learning curve that comes with using your first bong and as such, it is important to have a thorough guide to take you through the process and explain how to operate each part of the bong and exactly what it is designed to do. Fill your bong with water

Bongs, which are in the broader category of water pipes, use a water filtration system that is designed to cool down the hot smoke and filter out some of the tar that can be found in the smoke and typically accumulates in the lungs when smoking. While there is no question that water is needed, many struggle with figuring out how much water to fill their bong with. Many recommend that you fill your bong with water until the downstem is fully submerged. For those who do not know, the downstem is the tube reaching out from the side of body of the bong and holds the bowl. Once you’ve done this, you can move onto the next step.

Prepare your herbs and pack the bowl

The next step is to prepare your herbs and pack the bowl. For most, a grinder works best. A grinder is a tool that includes two separate pieces with hard teeth that sandwich the herbs together and break them down into smaller chunks that can easily be packed into the bowl. However, others may prefer to use their fingers to break down the bud. Once you’ve broken down a significant amount, begin lightly packing it into the bowl until it is almost at the top. Make sure not to pack it too tightly or else you will have difficulty drawing air through it when you begin smoking.

Once you’re done packing the bowl, take a test draw by placing your mouth at the top of the bong and inhaling. If the water begins bubbling, and you don’t feel as though you are struggling to inhale, you have packed it right. If you have difficulty taking draws, you need to take out the herbs and place them in the bowl again until it is packed properly.

Start smoking

Put your mouth to the top of the opening of the bong and begin lightly inhaling. As you do so, graze your lighter over the top of the herbs in the bowl, which should now be replaced in the downstem. As you begin to burn the herbs, continue to inhale and stop lighting when there is enough smoke in the tube. Then, continue inhaling and remove the bowl from the downstem so that you can clear all of the smoke from the device. You can do this as much as you would like until you’ve received the desired effects that you were looking to gain from it.

While knowing how to use your bong is certainly necessary, you aren’t going to get the best experience out of your smoke session unless you have a high-quality bong such as a Benjamin Danklin.
