About Yuengling Brewery:
D.G. Yuengling & Son, America’s oldest operating brewery, is a sixth-generation family-owned company founded in 1829. Known for its flagship Traditional Lager, the brewery has survived prohibition and continues to be an iconic American beer brand.
History
Founding: German immigrant David Gottlieb Jüngling anglicized his name to Yuengling and founded the “Eagle Brewery” in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, in 1829. After an 1831 fire, he moved the brewery to its current location on Mahantongo Street.
Prohibition: The brewery survived the Prohibition era (1920–1933) by producing “near beers” with low alcohol content and by establishing a dairy that produced ice cream.
Expansion: Richard “Dick” Yuengling Jr. took over in 1985 and led the company’s expansion beyond its historic footprint. In 1999, Yuengling acquired a brewery in Tampa, Florida, to increase its production capacity. In 2020, the company formed a joint venture with Molson Coors to further expand distribution west of its traditional East Coast markets.
Family ownership: The brewery has been continuously owned and operated by the Yuengling family for six generations. Dick Yuengling’s four daughters are set to become the next generation to run the company.
Brewery locations
Yuengling’s products are produced at three company-owned breweries:
Pottsville, Pennsylvania: The historic facility on Mahantongo Street and a second location at Mill Creek.
Tampa, Florida: A brewery purchased from the Stroh Brewery Company.
Notable products
Traditional Lager: Yuengling’s flagship beer is an amber lager that was reintroduced in 1987 and accounts for a significant portion of its sales.
Black & Tan: A blend of the brewery’s Dark Brewed Porter
and Lord Chesterfield Ale.
Dark Brewed Porter: An American-style porter that uses a bottom-fermenting yeast.
Lord Chesterfield Ale: A crisp, hoppy ale that was first introduced in 1934.
FLIGHT by Yuengling: A light beer with fewer calories and carbohydrates, launched in 2020.
Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter: A limited-release collaboration beer with Hershey’s, first produced in 2019.
Visitor information
Pottsville Tours: The historic Pottsville brewery offers free tours that walk visitors through the facility’s history and brewing process. Visitors can see the famous hand-dug fermentation caves and get a free beer sample.
Tampa Campus: The Tampa brewery is undergoing renovations to enhance its visitor experience, with plans for a restaurant, beer garden, and pilot brewing system.
