Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA joins the non-alcoholic beer family

Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA is getting ready to join the brewery’s growing non-alcoholic beer lineup in 2027, bringing another option to drinkers who want the familiar character of an IPA without the alcohol. The new release from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is expected to arrive in 12-ounce cans, and the packaging makes the direction pretty clear: this is a tropical IPA built around the Trail Pass name, with less than 0.5% alcohol by volume.

That’s the headline. Another non-alcoholic IPA is coming….Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA!

Sierra Nevada has plenty of experience brewing hop-forward beer, and the arrival of Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA gives the company another opportunity to bring that experience to a part of the beer market that continues to attract attention. Non-alcoholic beer isn’t just a substitute for a regular beer anymore, at least not for every drinker. Some people want an IPA with lunch, others want something after a workout, and plenty of beer fans simply want to cut back on alcohol without giving up the flavors and rituals that made beer part of their lives in the first place.

Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA will carry the Sierra Nevada name into that conversation, with the new can design featuring the brewery’s familiar branding above bright green and orange artwork. The Trail Pass name sits prominently across a green background, while the orange lower section highlights the words “Non-Alcoholic Tropical IPA.” It’s a colorful package that stands apart from a traditional Sierra Nevada pale ale can while keeping the brewery’s identity front and center.

The new Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA is listed at less than 0.5% ABV, placing it in the non-alcoholic beer category while acknowledging that products in this category can contain small amounts of alcohol. That distinction matters for consumers who read labels carefully, particularly those who avoid alcohol completely rather than simply looking for a lower-alcohol alternative.

The tropical IPA description also gives drinkers a reasonable idea of where this beer is intended to fit, although the packaging alone doesn’t establish its exact hop varieties, tasting notes or bitterness level. Sierra Nevada has not provided detailed release information in the announcement supplied here, so specific claims about pineapple, mango, citrus or other individual flavors would be premature until the brewery releases a full product description or tasting information.

Still, the category has room for another recognizable name. Non-alcoholic IPA drinkers often want more than a thin, sweet or overly restrained beer, and hop character can make the difference between a product that feels like a satisfying alternative and one that misses the point. A tropical IPA has an obvious appeal because the style suggests a fruit-forward direction, but the finished beer will have to deliver that impression in the glass.

Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA is also an interesting addition because the brewery is not an unfamiliar newcomer trying to establish credibility with beer drinkers. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., founded in Chico, California, has built its reputation around beers that helped define the American craft brewing movement, and the company now operates brewing facilities in Chico and Mills River, North Carolina. Extending the Trail Pass range gives the brewery another way to reach customers whose drinking habits have changed but who still want a recognizable beer brand in the refrigerator.

There is more to come. The supplied information points to a 2027 release, but an exact launch date, distribution details and pricing have not been announced in the material provided.

For now, Sierra Nevada Trail Pass Tropical IPA is one to watch for drinkers exploring non-alcoholic IPA options, especially those who prefer hop-forward beers and want something beyond the standard pale lager alternatives. The next questions are straightforward: how tropical will it taste, where will it be sold, and how widely will Sierra Nevada distribute it?

The can is the first look. The beer itself is what matters next.

About Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is one of America’s best-known independent craft breweries, recognized for its hop-forward beers, commitment to brewing quality and long history of helping shape the modern American craft beer movement. Founded by Ken Grossman in Chico, California, in 1980, Sierra Nevada began with a straightforward idea: beer should have more flavor, more character and more personality than the mass-market lagers that dominated American beer shelves at the time.

Grossman started as a homebrewer fascinated by hops and the science of fermentation. He opened a homebrew supply shop in Chico before taking the next step and building a brewery of his own, using salvaged dairy equipment and a willingness to experiment. The early brewery was built around a simple principle that continues to define Sierra Nevada: make beer worth drinking, pay attention to the ingredients and do not sacrifice quality just to make production easier.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale became the beer that helped introduce generations of American drinkers to a more assertive hop profile. Its use of Cascade hops helped establish a recognizable American pale ale character, and the beer became a defining example of what independent American brewing could accomplish. As the craft beer market grew, Sierra Nevada expanded its portfolio with beers that reached different audiences without abandoning its interest in flavor and brewing technique.

The brewery’s lineup includes established favorites such as Pale Ale and Torpedo Extra IPA, along with seasonal releases, experimental beers and a wide range of hop-driven offerings. Hazy IPAs, stronger specialty beers and limited releases give longtime fans new options to explore, while familiar year-round beers maintain the connection to the brewery’s early history. Sierra Nevada has also developed products outside traditional alcoholic beer, including Hop Splash sparkling hop water and its Trail Pass non-alcoholic beer range.

The Trail Pass family reflects a change in how people approach beer. Some consumers want to reduce alcohol consumption during the week, while others want a beer-style drink after exercise, during outdoor activities or at social gatherings where they would rather avoid a conventional alcoholic beverage. Sierra Nevada’s Trail Pass lineup gives those customers alternatives that retain the familiar format and flavor direction of beer, with products such as Trail Pass IPA, Trail Pass Hazy IPA, Trail Pass Golden and Trail Pass Brewveza. The lineup has continued to evolve, with new products and updated packaging bringing additional variety to the category.

The proposed Trail Pass Tropical IPA extends that approach with a new non-alcoholic IPA expected in 2027. Its 12-ounce can identifies the beer as tropical IPA and states that it contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume. Detailed tasting notes, pricing and distribution information remain subject to further announcements, but the release fits the brewery’s ongoing effort to offer more choices to people who enjoy craft beer.

Sierra Nevada operates breweries in Chico, California, and Mills River, North Carolina. The two locations give the company a presence on both the West Coast and the East Coast while supporting its broader brewing and distribution operations. Despite its growth, Sierra Nevada remains family-owned and operated, a point the company emphasizes through its familiar packaging message: “Family Owned, Operated & Argued Over.”

Beyond brewing, Sierra Nevada has developed a strong connection to outdoor recreation, environmental responsibility and ingredient quality. Its brand identity often draws on adventure and the outdoors, a natural fit for a company whose beers are associated with hiking, camping, backyard gatherings and time spent with friends. The brewery also welcomes visitors at its facilities, where taprooms, restaurants and brewery experiences provide opportunities to explore its beers firsthand.

Sierra Nevada’s continuing success comes from maintaining recognizable flagship beers while making room for new ideas. The company can introduce a new IPA, revisit a familiar style or develop a non-alcoholic beer without losing sight of the brewing roots that established its reputation.
