New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend Whiskey

The label tells the story pretty quickly: this is not another standard 90-proof whiskey release. New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend is coming as a cask strength American single malt whiskey, bottled at a hefty 67.2% ABV, or 134.5 proof, with the individual barrel selected by Hoffman’s Party Store.

That is a serious bottle.

Today I have a new single malt whiskey coming soon from New Holland Spirits in Holland, Michigan, and this one caught my attention because the numbers on the label are not messing around. The new New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend Single Barrel Whiskey is marked as American single malt whiskey, cask strength and single barrel, with a 750ml bottle size and a barrel identification of MAL0010R-11L6.

And then there is that proof.

134.5 proof.

That is going to be one hot pour.

The label identifies this release as New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend, the American single malt whiskey that has been part of New Holland’s spirits story for years. Zeppelin Bend has developed a reputation as one of New Holland’s distinctive whiskey offerings, built around malted grain, American oak aging and the kind of rich character that separates an American single malt from the more familiar bourbon category.

This new single barrel version, though, is a different animal.

The bottle shown here is specifically marked Single Barrel, and the barrel was picked by Hoffman’s Party Store. That matters because a single barrel release can show how one individual barrel develops compared with a standard whiskey expression that is blended for consistency. The barrel becomes part of the personality of the bottle.

And at cask strength, there is nowhere to hide for New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend

New Holland Spirits has been working with whiskey for years, and New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend has appeared in a number of special and limited expressions. The distillery has also experimented with different barrel finishes and aging approaches, giving its American single malt program plenty of room to move beyond a basic whiskey formula.

This one keeps things much simpler on the front of the label. American single malt. Single barrel. Cask strength.

That is enough.

For whiskey drinkers who like to add a few drops of water and explore how a high-proof spirit changes in the glass, a 67.2% ABV American single malt can be particularly interesting. The high proof gives the drinker room to experiment, and if the underlying whiskey brings vanilla, cocoa, malt and oak character, there should be plenty to work with once the alcohol settles down.

I would expect New Holland Spirits Zeppelin Bend to be a whiskey that rewards patience. Pour it. Let it sit. Take a small sip. Add some water if needed. Then go back to it. Not a shot whiskey. Not remotely.

The 750ml bottle size is also worth noting because that is the standard full-size bottle format most American whiskey drinkers expect, making this a proper retail release rather than a tiny novelty bottle. The label is clean and distinctive, with the large Zeppelin Bend name, the blue airship graphic and the rope motif giving it a look that separates it from New Holland’s other whiskey packaging.

There is also something fun about seeing a retailer-specific barrel selection from Hoffman’s Party Store. New Holland has developed a single-barrel program that allows individual barrels to receive their own identity, and that makes this particular Zeppelin Bend release more interesting than simply seeing another bottle of the standard expression appear on a shelf.

So this Zeppelin Bend release fits neatly into a bigger New Holland whiskey strategy while still being its own bottle. The big question now is when it actually lands.

I do not have the final release date yet, so for now this is one to watch. If Hoffman’s Party Store has selected a particularly expressive barrel, the combination of American single malt, new oak, cask strength and single-barrel aging could make this a very interesting New Holland Spirits release.

And 134.5 proof means you will probably want to share it. Maybe carefully.

About New Holland Spirits and New Holland Distilling Co.

New Holland Spirits has become an important part of the New Holland Brewing story, but the whiskey side of the company has its own history and personality. Based in Holland, Michigan, New Holland Brewing and Distilling has spent years building a portfolio that moves well beyond beer, with whiskey, bourbon, gin, vodka, ready-to-drink cocktails and other spirits now sitting alongside the brewery’s better-known beer brands.

The distilling operation dates back years, when New Holland began exploring what it could do with spirits using its brewing knowledge. One of the interesting parts of the company’s approach is that New Holland did not treat brewing and distilling as completely separate worlds. Grain, fermentation, aging and barrel work became shared tools, and that has helped produce spirits that often carry some of the same experimental attitude found in the brewery.

Zeppelin Bend American Single Malt Whiskey is one of the clearest examples.

Zeppelin Bend has developed its own identity within the New Holland Spirits portfolio. Rather than simply chasing bourbon trends, New Holland has continued developing American single malt whiskey as a category, giving the company another way to work with malted grain, oak aging and barrel experimentation.

The Zeppelin Bend name has also been used for special releases over the years. New Holland has produced older Zeppelin Bend whiskey and experimented with different finishing barrels. Those releases show how far the distillery can push the base whiskey once it has developed in oak.

That experimentation is a big reason the new Hoffman’s Party Store single barrel release is interesting.

A single barrel whiskey is not designed around blending dozens of barrels into one consistent profile. Instead, the individual barrel becomes the release. The location of the barrel, the oak, the maturation time, the spirit inside and the conditions during aging can all influence the finished whiskey. Even when two barrels begin with the same distillate, they can end up tasting noticeably different.

Then New Holland leaves this one at 134.5 proof.

That is the other major story.

At 67.2% ABV, the Zeppelin Bend Single Barrel Whiskey is being bottled at cask strength rather than brought down to a more conventional proof with water. That means the bottle gives whiskey drinkers the opportunity to experience the spirit at its full bottled strength and decide for themselves whether they want to add water.

For serious whiskey fans, that can be part of the fun.

High-proof whiskey can change dramatically in the glass. The first sip may be aggressive, especially at 134.5 proof, but allowing the whiskey to breathe and adding a small amount of water can open up different aromas and flavors. Malt, caramel, vanilla, oak, spice and darker notes can become easier to pick apart once the alcohol is brought into balance.

New Holland’s broader spirits lineup has continued to expand beyond its best-known beer brands. The company produces bourbon, American single malt whiskey, rye, malted rye, wheat whiskey and various barrel-finished expressions.

The company’s whiskey program also shows how much attention New Holland is putting into American whiskey beyond traditional bourbon. Different grains, aging approaches and barrel selections give the distillery plenty of room to experiment.

The company’s beer side remains hugely important, of course. Dragon’s Milk is still one of New Holland’s signature brands, and the brewery has continued expanding that family with new beer and spirits projects.

Now Zeppelin Bend gets another turn.

This Hoffman’s Party Store selection has the potential to be one of those releases that whiskey collectors notice because it combines several things in one bottle: New Holland Spirits, Zeppelin Bend, American single malt whiskey, single barrel aging, cask strength and 134.5 proof.

That is a lot of information on one label.

But it is the kind of information whiskey fans want.

For now, the release date is still coming. Once this particular Zeppelin Bend Single Barrel Whiskey starts reaching shelves, I will be interested in hearing how this barrel compares with the standard Zeppelin Bend and other special New Holland American single malt releases.

One barrel. One selection. One very high-proof whiskey.

And that should make for an interesting pour.
