About Modestman Brewing:
What intrigues Modestman, almost as much as what beer is being brewed currently, is the nuanced personalities and intensities behind the product. Modestman’s master brewers have a deep understanding of traditional beer styles. We source only the finest ingredients possible for our beers. The high quality and attention to detail make way for exceptional world-class beer.
Modestman Brewing was originally based in Keene, New Hampshire, but as of August 2025, it has fully relocated to South Portland, Maine, to expand production and focus on quality.
Founded: 2019 by Ash Sheehan, a former fine-dining restaurateur from Maine
Original Location: 100 Main St, Keene, NH
Current Location: 45 Huntress Ave & 35 Park Ave, South Portland, ME
Modestman Brewing quickly became known for its modern, experience-driven beer culture, especially in a region Sheehan once described as lacking “good beer.” The Keene taproom featured a 100-seat space with a sidewalk patio and a lineup focused on IPAs and sours.
Why the Move to Maine?
In August 2025, Modestman announced the closure of its Keene location and the consolidation of all operations in South Portland. The decision was driven by:
Production goals: The Keene facility couldn’t scale to meet demand
Creative control: Maine offered better infrastructure and community support
Personal ties: Sheehan lives on Peaks Island and has family roots in the region
They purchased two facilities in South Portland:
Taproom: 45 Huntress Ave (formerly Fore River Brewing)
Poduction Facility: 35 Park Ave (formerly Definitive Brewing)
Beer & Distribution
Modestman produces around 4,000 barrels annuall, with plans to triple that in Maine. Their beers are distributed in:
Maine
New Hampshire
Massachusetts
Occasionally in other U.S. regions
Staff & Community Impact
The Keene closure affected several part-time staff, including brewers and taproom employees. While some were given notice and encouraged to apply for unemployment, others reported being caught off guard.
Despite the bittersweet transition, Modestman remains committed to crafting beer with integrity, passion, and knowledge. Their new Maine base positions them to grow and innovate within a vibrant coastal brewing scene.
