Firestone Walker Assumes Stewardship of Trumer’s U.S. Operations, Ensuring the Future of a Classic German‑Style Pilsner
In a major development for the American craft beer landscape, Firestone Walker Brewing Company has officially taken over stewardship of Trumer Pils’ U.S. operations, marking a new chapter for one of the most award‑winning German‑style pilsners brewed on American soil. This transition ensures that Trumer Pils, long celebrated for its precision, balance, and European brewing heritage, will continue to reach U.S. drinkers with uninterrupted availability.
For more than two decades, Trumer Pils has been brewed in Berkeley, California, as a sister operation to Trumer Privatbrauerei in Obertrum, Austria, a brewery whose lineage stretches back to 1601. The U.S. brewery, operated by The Gambrinus Company, became known for importing Trumer’s hops, malt, and yeast directly from Europe and brewing the beer locally using the same traditional methods. Under longtime brewmaster Lars Larson, Trumer Pils earned 21 gold medals in prestigious global competitions, cementing its reputation as one of the most technically accomplished pilsners in the country.
With Firestone Walker now assuming stewardship, production of Trumer Pils will shift from Berkeley to the brewery’s flagship facility in Paso Robles, California. Firestone Walker emphasized that the move is designed to protect the beer’s quality, freshness, and legacy, ensuring that fans continue to enjoy the crisp, clean, German‑style lager they know. The company also confirmed that customers can expect uninterrupted availability throughout the transition.
The Gambrinus Company will begin winding down operations at the Berkeley brewery, including the closure of the Trumer taproom. Leadership at Gambrinus noted that entrusting the brand to a family‑owned brewery with deep respect for tradition was essential to securing Trumer’s long‑term future in the U.S. market. Firestone Walker’s brewing philosophy, rooted in craft, quality, and respect for classic styles—made them a natural fit to carry the brand forward.
This transition arrives at a challenging moment for the U.S. craft beer industry, which saw a 5% production decline in 2025, alongside multiple brewery closures across the Bay Area. Against this backdrop, Firestone Walker’s stewardship offers stability for a beloved pilsner with centuries‑deep roots and a loyal American following.
As Firestone Walker prepares to brew Trumer Pils in Paso Robles, the brewery has made its mission clear: honor the beer’s heritage, maintain its award‑winning quality, and ensure its continued presence in the American craft beer market.
As a bonus, I’ve added in some of the new packaging coming out of Firestone Walker for Trumer Pils 12-oz and tall boy 19.2-oz cans.
