Wild Turkey Christmas Rye Austin Nichols Archives: 11-Year Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey

Wild Turkey is reaching back into its whiskey history again, and this time it is bringing back a name that should get the attention of serious rye whiskey collectors. The new Wild Turkey Austin Nichols Archives Christmas Rye Edition is an 11-year-old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey bottled at 115 proof, and it is being positioned as an ode to the original Christmas Rye release. That’s a pretty interesting bottle.

The Wild Turkey Christmas Rye name carries some history with it. Wild Turkey has a long relationship with American rye whiskey, and the original holiday-themed releases became part of the brand’s older catalog, with bottles from previous decades now attracting attention from vintage whiskey collectors. The Austin Nichols Archives program gives Wild Turkey an opportunity to revisit some of those historic releases, taking familiar names and bringing them back in a modern limited-edition format. The Wild Turkey Christmas Rye is a particularly appropriate choice for the collection, especially as the holiday season approaches.

This new Wild Turkey Christmas Rye is aged for 11 years, which puts it in an interesting position among premium Kentucky rye whiskey releases. The bottle carries a substantial 115-proof presentation, equivalent to 57.5% alcohol by volume, and is identified as non-chill filtered. That last detail will appeal to whiskey drinkers who appreciate a less processed presentation that retains the whiskey’s naturally occurring oils and compounds, which can contribute to its texture and mouthfeel. It is also presented in a standard 750ml bottle.

The packaging makes the historical connection fairly obvious. The Wild Turkey Austin Nichols Archives label features the familiar illustrated turkey inside a circular emblem, with the Archives name directly beneath the Wild Turkey branding. The dark green Wild Turkey Christmas Rye banner stands out against the cream-colored label, while the gold lettering gives the bottle a traditional holiday appearance. It looks like a deliberate nod to an older whiskey era rather than another ordinary limited-edition bottle with a new label.

Wild Turkey Christmas Rye brings back a piece of whiskey history

The original Wild Turkey Christmas Rye has an interesting place in the distillery’s history. Earlier versions were released periodically during the 1980s and 1990s, and the old bottles have become part of the vintage Wild Turkey collecting conversation. The new Austin Nichols Archives Christmas Rye Edition is an opportunity to revisit that history without simply trying to reproduce an old bottle exactly as it was made decades ago.

The Archives collection itself is designed around historic Wild Turkey expressions. Its first release was the Gold Foil Edition, a 16-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon bottled at 120 proof, which drew inspiration from the highly recognizable vintage Gold Foil bottlings. The Christmas Rye follows that release with a different whiskey category, giving the series an opportunity to explore Wild Turkey’s older rye whiskey history as well as its bourbon heritage.

There is something appealing about seeing a major whiskey producer revisit its older rye releases. Rye whiskey has experienced plenty of renewed attention over the last several years, but Wild Turkey has been making rye for generations, and the Russell family’s influence on the category is well established. An 11-year age statement also gives this release a different profile on paper than the younger rye expressions that tend to dominate everyday whiskey shelves.

11 years old, 115 proof and non-chill filtered

The specifications are worth paying attention to. Wild Turkey Austin Nichols Archives Christmas Rye is identified as Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, aged 11 years and bottled at 115 proof. At 57.5% ABV, it is a high-strength rye whiskey intended for drinkers who appreciate a more concentrated presentation.

The non-chill-filtered designation is another detail worth noting, particularly for collectors comparing this release with other premium rye whiskey bottlings. Rather than focusing only on the age statement, the combination of 11 years of maturation, substantial proof and the historical Christmas Rye connection gives this bottle a distinct identity within the Wild Turkey portfolio.

I would be interested to see how Wild Turkey Christmas Rye balances the spice expected from a rye whiskey with the influence of 11 years in oak. The label doesn’t provide tasting notes, so there is no reason to invent a flavor profile before the whiskey has been properly evaluated. Still, the age and bottling strength make this one worth watching.

For Wild Turkey collectors, fans of older Kentucky rye whiskey and anyone following the new Austin Nichols Archives collection, this Wild Turkey Christmas Rye Edition is an interesting continuation of the brand’s effort to revisit its history. It brings back a recognizable name, adds an 11-year age statement and delivers the whiskey at a robust 115 proof. A very welcome holiday revival.

Wild Turkey Distilling Company is one of the most recognizable names in American whiskey, with a history deeply connected to Kentucky bourbon, traditional rye whiskey and generations of family distilling expertise. Located in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, overlooking the Kentucky River, Wild Turkey has built its reputation around full-flavored whiskey, substantial proof points, traditional production methods and a commitment to maintaining the character that made the brand famous.

The history behind Wild Turkey stretches back much further than the familiar turkey logo. In 1855, wholesale grocer Austin Nichols began selling wine and spirits, eventually becoming connected to the distribution and development of the Wild Turkey brand. The Ripy family opened its distillery on Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg in 1869, establishing an important part of the area’s whiskey-making history. The Wild Turkey name itself came into use in 1940 after a distillery executive shared whiskey samples with friends during a wild turkey hunting trip. The following year, those friends asked for more of that Wild Turkey whiskey, and the name stuck.

The Russell family is central to the modern identity of Wild Turkey. Jimmy Russell joined the distillery in 1954 and eventually became one of the most respected master distillers in American whiskey. His decades of experience helped establish the recognizable Wild Turkey style, with an emphasis on bold flavor, careful barrel selection and consistency. His son Eddie Russell joined the distillery in 1981, working his way through the operation before becoming a Master Distiller in 2015. Together, Jimmy and Eddie represent one of the best-known father-and-son partnerships in the whiskey business.

The next generation is also involved. Bruce Russell, Jimmy’s grandson and Eddie’s son, has become an important part of the company’s future, including his work as Associate Master Blender. His involvement in the Austin Nichols Archives collection represents a continuation of the Russell family’s connection to the brand and its historic whiskey releases. The collection was developed to revisit some of the most recognizable bottles from Wild Turkey’s past, bringing those expressions back through new limited-edition releases.

Wild Turkey produces an extensive portfolio of bourbon and rye whiskey. Its flagship Wild Turkey 101 Kentucky Straight Bourbon remains one of the most recognizable high-proof bourbons in the United States. The brand also produces Wild Turkey 81, Rare Breed, Rare Breed Rye and Kentucky Spirit, along with premium and limited-edition releases that showcase different approaches to maturation and barrel selection.

Russell’s Reserve is another important part of the company’s portfolio. The collection includes small-batch and single-barrel expressions, with older age-stated releases and specialty bottlings that appeal to collectors and experienced whiskey drinkers. These expressions allow the Russell family and the distilling team to showcase different characteristics of Kentucky bourbon and rye whiskey.

Wild Turkey has also developed an impressive history of limited-edition releases. The Master’s Keep collection became particularly popular among collectors, offering older and more experimental whiskey expressions. Releases such as Master’s Keep Cornerstone and Master’s Keep Triumph demonstrated the distillery’s interest in premium rye whiskey, while other editions explored extended bourbon aging and specialty barrel selections.

The Austin Nichols Archives collection represents another chapter in that approach. Rather than simply introducing new expressions, the series draws inspiration from iconic vintage bottlings that helped establish Wild Turkey’s reputation. The Gold Foil Edition launched the collection with a 16-year-old, 120-proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The Christmas Rye Edition continues the concept by revisiting a historic rye whiskey release, this time with an 11-year-old whiskey bottled at 115 proof.

Wild Turkey’s production facility remains in Lawrenceburg, where the company continues to produce and age its whiskey using traditional Kentucky methods. The distillery’s extensive rickhouse operations are an important part of the maturation process, with seasonal temperature changes helping whiskey interact with the charred oak barrels as it ages.

Owned by Campari Group, Wild Turkey maintains a significant presence in the American and international whiskey markets while continuing to draw on its Kentucky roots. Its combination of established everyday expressions, premium bourbon, rye whiskey and collectible limited releases gives the brand a broad following among casual whiskey drinkers and dedicated collectors.

From Wild Turkey 101 and Rare Breed to Russell’s Reserve and the Austin Nichols Archives collection, the distillery continues to build on a history that spans generations. Its commitment to bold Kentucky whiskey and the Russell family’s influence remain central to the brand’s identity.
