Sierra Nevada Bière de Garde Coming to 2026 Trip In The Woods Series
This morning, I bring you another intriguing release from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, California, and Mills River, North Carolina, as the brewery continues its exploration of barrel-aged and specialty craft beer with the 2026 Trip in the Woods Barrel-Aged Bière de Garde. The latest entry in the celebrated Trip in the Woods series takes a traditional European farmhouse ale and gives it an unmistakably Sierra Nevada treatment through fermentation and extended aging in wine barrels.
According to the label, this Bière de Garde is a farmhouse ale traditionally associated with aging, built around a malt backbone that provides body and toasty Maillard character. A restrained European hop bill contributes soft herbal complexity, while Saison yeast brings delicate fruit character to the finished beer. The beer is then aged in both red wine and port barrels, adding another layer of depth to an already complex beer.
The result should be a fascinating intersection of traditional farmhouse brewing, Belgian and French-inspired yeast character, malt complexity and barrel aging. At 7.2% ABV, the 2026 Sierra Nevada Trip in the Woods Barrel-Aged Bière de Garde lands firmly in the territory of a contemplative specialty ale without reaching the extreme alcohol levels found in some of the brewery’s other barrel-aged releases.
The label describes the beer as emerging from the shadows with dark fruit notes, a particularly appropriate description considering the combination of red wine barrels and port barrels. Port aging can contribute rich fruit-like impressions, while wine-barrel aging can introduce additional layers of oak and vinous character. Combined with Saison yeast and the malt-forward foundation of a Bière de Garde, this beer could offer a remarkably layered drinking experience.
The Trip in the Woods series has become one of Sierra Nevada’s most interesting platforms for experimentation. Rather than simply producing another traditional IPA, stout or barleywine, the brewery uses the series to explore unusual combinations of established Sierra Nevada beers, specialty brewing techniques, barrel aging and extended maturation. Recent 2026 releases have included barrel-aged versions of familiar Sierra Nevada beers as well as new interpretations built specifically around the series.
This new Bière de Garde is especially interesting because the style itself isn’t something that appears nearly as frequently in the American craft beer market as IPA, stout, sour or lager. Traditionally associated with northern France, Bière de Garde is known for a malt-forward foundation, restrained bitterness, fermentation character and an emphasis on balance and drinkability. Sierra Nevada’s version pushes those traditional characteristics into barrel-aged territory.
The packaging shown on the label is a 16.9-ounce bottle, consistent with the larger-format presentation used for many specialty and barrel-aged beers. The ornate 2026 Trip in the Woods artwork also fits the series’ established visual identity, with a dark forest setting, golden botanical artwork and an almost mythical creature emerging from the woods.
At 7.2% ABV, this should be a beer worth taking slowly rather than treating like an everyday pint. The combination of farmhouse ale, Saison yeast, European hops, red wine barrels and port barrels creates plenty of potential for layers of malt, dark fruit, oak, wine-like complexity and subtle fermentation character.
As with other Trip in the Woods releases, the big question will be how those individual components come together after aging. Will the barrel character dominate? Will the Saison yeast remain prominent? Or will the malt, wine and port notes merge into something more integrated and sophisticated?
For fans of Sierra Nevada barrel-aged beer, Bière de Garde, farmhouse ales, Saison yeast, specialty craft beer and the Trip in the Woods series, this is certainly one to watch.

About Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.:
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is one of the most influential independent craft breweries in American brewing history. Founded in 1980 by Ken Grossman, the brewery began in Chico, California, growing from a small operation built around curiosity, experimentation and a commitment to brewing flavorful beer. Today, Sierra Nevada remains family owned and operated, with breweries in Chico, California, and Mills River, North Carolina, giving the brewery a presence on both the West Coast and East Coast.
The story of Sierra Nevada is closely connected to the American craft beer revolution. Ken Grossman started as a homebrewer and opened The Home Brew Shop in Chico before building the original Sierra Nevada brewhouse from salvaged equipment. The brewery’s early beers established a reputation for quality and distinctive hop character, with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale becoming one of the defining American craft beers of its era. The brewery’s continued emphasis on whole-cone hops, quality ingredients and traditional brewing techniques helped demonstrate that American beer could be flavorful, aromatic and dramatically different from the mass-market lagers that dominated the country when Sierra Nevada began.
Today, Sierra Nevada’s portfolio extends far beyond Pale Ale. The brewery produces classic beers, IPAs, seasonal releases, specialty beers and experimental offerings, including the highly regarded Trip in the Woods barrel-aging series. That series has become an important showcase for Sierra Nevada’s willingness to explore barrel aging, blending, fermentation and maturation while maintaining the brewery’s focus on quality and craftsmanship.
The Chico brewery remains the company’s original home and a major destination for craft beer fans. Sierra Nevada’s current brewery tour takes visitors through the historic 20th Street facility and explores how the original brewery evolved into a major American craft brewing operation. The Chico brewery’s story is inseparable from the history of American craft beer itself.
The Mills River brewery expanded Sierra Nevada’s reach into Western North Carolina and provides the brewery with a second major brewing campus. Located near the French Broad River and surrounded by forest, the Mills River property combines brewing, hospitality, food, gardens and outdoor spaces. Sierra Nevada describes the location as a place where visitors can tour the brewery, enjoy beer and food, and experience the natural setting surrounding the facility.
Sustainability is another major part of the Sierra Nevada identity. The brewery has invested heavily in renewable energy, environmental programs, agriculture and resource conservation. Sierra Nevada maintains agricultural operations in Chico and Mills River, including hops, barley, gardens and other crops, while incorporating regenerative agricultural practices. The brewery says its Chico operation includes significant acreage devoted to barley and rotational crops, gardens and hops, while Mills River incorporates its own organic agricultural areas.
That combination of American craft brewing history, hop-forward beer, specialty fermentation, barrel-aged beer, sustainability and independent family ownership continues to define Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. The 2026 Trip in the Woods Barrel-Aged Bière de Garde is another example of that philosophy: take a classic brewing tradition, apply modern American craft brewing expertise, introduce barrel maturation and create something distinctly Sierra Nevada.
For beer enthusiasts searching for Sierra Nevada specialty beer, barrel-aged beer, farmhouse ales, Bière de Garde, Saison-inspired beer, Trip in the Woods releases and limited Sierra Nevada beers, the brewery remains one of America’s most important sources of innovative and collectible craft beer.
