Budweiser Black Crown Based on Project 12 Los Angeles & Bow Tie-Shaped Can – Anheuser-Busch Raising Their ABV

We brought you news of Budweiser Black Crown back in September, and now some additional details emerging for Budweiser’s entry into a higher ABV brew (6%).  Black Crown will be based on one of the beers coming from the Budweiser Project 12 series of beers.  More specifically the beer will be based on the beer created by their Los Angeles brewery called 91406 (below).

Also part of this push will be Michelob Black Bock, Beck’s Sapphire, Becks Black Jewel, Rolling Rock Black Rock and Busch Black Light.

The launch will likely be backed with significant marketing — possibly even a Super Bowl ad — as the brewer seeks to reverse the long-decline of the Budweiser franchise in the U.S. The move follows the launch in January of Bud Light Platinum, which at 6% alcohol by volume matches the ABV in Black Crown. By comparison, regular Budweiser is 5% ABV and regular Bud Light 4.2%.

The brewer is also planning a new "bow-tie" shaped can for Budweiser, playing off the well-known brand logo design. It won’t replace the original Bud can, but will be made available in a special 8-pack, Mr. McCarthy said.
