Horny Goat – Don’t Let the Name Fool You (Brownie Porter & Stacked Milk Stout)

It would be all too easy to lose sight of the beer when each one is wrapped in double entendre and tagged with a brewery name like “Horny Goat” but don’t let that fool you.  The clever marketing you notice first certainly gets your attention, and in the busy supermarket beer aisle, getting your attention is half the battle.

In the name of full disclosure, Horny Goat brewing was nice enough to send me a number of their beers to try, and today we’re starting with two of their winter exclusive brews…Brownie Porter and Stacked Milk Stout.

We started the night with their Brownie Porter.  While the cute goat on the label (yes I said “cute goat!”) is holding a plate of fresh brownies, it was brown sugar that came out in the flavor profile for me and of course the traditional vanilla flavors of a classic porter.  This beer doesn’t have the creaminess of a typical porter and while the label does mention cinnamon, It was subtle for sure, perhaps masked by the cacao & chocolate flavors.  I did get a subtle cherry-like flavor in the background that I really liked and as it warmed the cinnamon presence came up.  What I really liked with this beer was one particular flavor…hazelnut.  It balanced out the sweetness for me and really created a nice finish to the beer.  At 5.6% ABV you can probably drink more than a few of these, but I suspect the sweeter finish may not encourage that.

Up next tonight was Horny Goat Stacked Milk Stout…and let me tell you that goat is Stacked!  This one is classic milk stout and a really drinkable beer, especially on a cold evening like tonight.  With just a touch of coffee and lots of chocolate in the late tastes, this one is a sweet beer lovers go-to-Goat.  I was expecting more of a heavy mouthfeel, but it was surprisingly light and drinkable.  As it warmed the coffee flavors came up as did the sweetness of the finish.  Not sure what the ABV is but this is a nice desert beer.  If you’re looking for a classic Milk Stout this is your beer.
