World Series Craft Beer Bets Part 2 – Harpoon v Schlafly

The World Series starts at Fenway Park in Boston tonight and many questions abound. Will the Sox bullpen continue their hot streak? Will the Cards come back thirsty for revenge after the 2004 Sox Series sweep? Will Harpoon Brewery’s tasting room have a keg of Schlafly Beer on tap, or will The Saint Louis Brewery be pouring Harpoon IPA in the end?
When it was determined that the Boston Red Sox would be playing the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, Harpoon president Dan Kenary dialed up his friend Dan Kopman, co-founder of the The Saint Louis Brewery, makers of Schlafly Beer, and arranged a wager. The wager: if the Red Sox win the World Series, Schlafly will pour a keg of Harpoon IPA in their tap room and if the Cardinals win, a keg of Schlafly will be tapped in Harpoon’s Boston tasting room.
Once the Series victors have been crowned, the brewery that has won the wager will ship a tap handle and a keg of their flagship beer to the losing brewery for tapping on their draft system. The beer will remain on tap until the keg is empty.

Our beloved baseball team has once again made it to the Fall Classic and the Commissioner’s Trophy won’t be the only thing on the line when the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox face-off once more in the 2013 World Series. It turns out that our co-founder, Dan Kopman is quite the betting man and Schlafly Beer has not one, but two exciting bets riding on the Series with our friends at Harpoon Brewery and the Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams.
The wager between our fearless leader, Dan Kopman and Harpoon president Dan Kenary is fairly straightforward. Whoever loses has to put a keg of beer from the other brewery on tap at their tasting room. If St. Louis loses, look for a keg of Harpoon IPA pour from our Schlafly Tap Room taps. If the Cardinals prevail…when the Cardinals prevail, beer drinkers visiting Harpoon in Boston will have a chance to taste what 12 World Series Championships tastes like. And by that we mean to say that 12 World Series Championships tastes like Schlafly Beer… just to be clear.
Dan Kopman and Samuel Adams founder, Jim Koch also got to talking about the upcoming Series, and decided that a bet was in order. Before all was said and done, Jim had offered up two cases of Boston Lager and a lobster dinner. Not to be outdone, Dan not only offered up some Schlafly Pale Ale and BBQ dinner from Pappy’s Smokehouse…and then raised the stakes to include the losing city shipping off a brewer, all expense paid, to the winning city’s brewery to help brew a victory beer.
Even Boston’s favorite son, Ben Affleck is ready to cheer for the Cardinals!
Jim Koch had to say about the bet : “Here in Boston, we are lucky to be home to some of the best sports teams in the country. The Boston Red Sox are the epitome of passion and true American tradition. I look forward to seeing the team bring home the World Series trophy once again – and then toasting with a Boston Lager. May the best team win!”
And here’s what Dan had to say: “St. Louis is the home of the best fans in baseball and the best beers in the US. I look forward to our 12th World Series victory and then visiting my good friend Jim and toasting with a Schlafly Pale Ale. May the best team win!”
When it comes to great craft beer and baseball, typically you’re going to encounter a win-win situation, and that is absolutely the case here. Whichever baseball team brings home the Series, this is a fun reminder of the great friendships and community that is part of the DNA of the US craft beer scene. What could be better than hometown beer and baseball. Now, who’s ready to root, root, root for the Cardinals in the World Series!
