Widmer Brothers – Old Embalmer Returns With A New Barrel-Aged Friend

Our brewers have long been infatuated with barrel-aging beers. Just this year alone we are putting out a total of nine barrel-aged beers for large-scale distribution.

Today we are announcing a unique offering, our sixth barrel-aged release in 2013: Barrel-Aged Old Embalmer 2013. As part of our Brother’s Reserve Series, we took our Old Embalmer barleywine and aged it for three months in pinot noir barrels from Patricia Green Cellars, located in Newburg, Ore.

We have been brewing Old Embalmer, which we also released today as part of our Brothers’ Reserve Series, since 1999. This brewers’ favorite is a big, malt-forward barleywine with toffee, vanilla, and sweet caramel flavor points.

This year we used the X-431 experimental hop in Old Embalmer. X-431 has become especially popular in the brewhouse recently for its strong tropical hop characteristics.

Aging Old Embalmer in pinot barrels brings the beer to a new level, amplifying the red fruit and vanilla notes, and giving it a tannic quality with hints of oak.

The two variations of Old Embalmer are available now for a limited time and in limited quantities. Both the barrel-aged version and the classic version will be available in 22s and on-draught in select retail environments.
