River Horse Sour Series – Sour Homer & Sour Lizzie Bottles Coming 5/20

Today you get to see two new Sour Series beers coming to bottles from River Horse.  Sour Homer is their cherry Berliner Weisse fermented with Lactobacillus and tart cherries, then soured in red wine barrels with blackberries and Brett (4.2%-AbV).  Sour Lizzie is their Farmhouse saison soured in white wine barrels with Brett (6%-AbV.)  These are both 750ml bottles and stay tuned for more.

Once upon a time…we had some leftover Farmhouse Saison. Rather than let it go to waste, and by waste we mean drink all of it, we thought we would get creative. We put it into white wine barrels from Alba Vineyards, added the funky yeast, Brettanomyces, and let it age for over a year! And thus, Sour Lizzie was born. Then one day, while trying out some different lacto bacteria strains for our Cherry Berliner Weisse, we noticed one of the strains was a little too aggressive. We wanted PG-13, but we were getting NC-17. But this wasn’t bad news; we thought that this strain would lend itself well to a sour version of the beer. We got to work. We put the Cherry Berliner Weisse into red wine barrels, again from Alba Vineyards, added blackberries, the funky Brett yeast, and let it age for over a year. BOOM! Sour Homer.

Sour Lizzie – 6% ABV

Our Farmhouse Saison, a Belgian-style ale brewed with white and pink peppercorns and lemongrass, soured in white wine barrels with Brettanomyces.

Sour Homer – 4.2% ABV

Our Cherry Berliner Weisse, a German-style wheat ale fermented with lactobacillus and tart cherries, soured in red wine barrels with blackberries and Brettanomyces.
