Perrin Brewing Co Next To Use Flat Top / Churchkey Cans

Looks like Perrin Brewing Co (Comstock Park, MI) will be the next to use the retro flat top cans.  This from Mlive:

The new microbrewery opening this summer in Comstock Park is planning to package its line of flagship brews in flat top cans, which were used by breweries prior to 1962, when the now ubiquitous pull tab can was invented. 

The cans require a churchkey to open.

About 600 barrels of initial beer batches are fermenting and undergoing taste testing, Sper said. The company’s initial flagship beer line styles include an IPA, golden ale, pale ale and a porter. The company brewing system has the capacity to brew between 12,000 and 15,000 barrels but they are only planning to brew between 3,000 and 5,000 barrels this year, Sper said.

The can requires a churchkey can opener to open. Cans like this were common before 1962.

The 12-ounce flat top cans feature a minimalist design and are distinctive for something they do not feature: An attention grabbing beer name — a marketing element that breweries are notorious for pushing the envelope on.

Creative, off-color, or otherwise quirky beer names (think Raging Bitch, Dirty Bastard, Dragon’s Milk, etc), are something of a staple in the craft beer industry, making Perrin’s decision not to name their beers something of an anomaly.
