Nitric Acid Spill Causes Evacuation of Dogfish Head Milton Evacuation

A container of nitric acid at the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton leaked today, prompting an evacuation of the building.
Joseph Hopple of Sussex County Emergency Medical Services said a 300-gallon container of nitric acid leaked as six workers were nearby. None were injured, he said.
The Brewery building and a nearby neighborhood’s pool and clubhouse were evacuated after the spill, which was reported at 2:20 p.m., Hopple said.

We had a small, contained spill of a cleaning chemical at the Milton brewery today.
The good news is that there were no injuries, the situation is under control, and we’ve already begun cleanup.
The bad news is that out of an abundance of caution and with some great guidance from our safety team, we evacuated the entire building – even though we had an afternoon of fully booked brewery tours and a Tasting Room packed with guests. To our guests – we are so sorry that we were not able to provide the Dogfish experience you were hoping for this afternoon. We will be emailing all of the guests who were registered tours this afternoon. Our hope is to reschedule your tour as soon as possible. We do realize some of you are only in town for the day and will not be able to reschedule. For that – again, we apologize.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank the first responders from the Milton Fire & Police departments, the Delaware State Police local EMTs and DNREC for their prompt & professional response. And remember, safety first!
