New Braunfels Brewing Announces Two New Sangre de Shiva Releases

Each release of Sangre de Shiva highlights a rotating selection of TX red wines from producers we are inspired by. We brew our black weizenbock, Shiva’s Tears, with 5 different malts. The black beer is transferred to wet barrels with aromatic lees and allowed to ferment and age for 8-12 months.

Blend1 was William Chris Vineyards Enchante and was bottled in August 2014-if you can find a bottle, it’s drinking beautifully right now.

Blend8 used wet Cinsault barrels from Lost Draw Cellars in Downtown Fredericksburg, TX. You may recognize the grape from Das Lokal Blend4, which we used the same release for late in 2016. Cinsault highlights the terroir of TX beautifully and we’re proud to have used it in this beer. Prior to bottling, we dosed the beer with deep purple TX Malbec lees to add aroma and depth. Each bottle and keg was conditioned with fresh beer in early May.

We were only able to process a single barrel of this release so only 25 cases and 4 slim kegs are available.

Blend9 used wet Mourvedré barrels from William Chris Vineyards. William Chris has long been a favorite winery of the brewery and their Enchante (sangre Blend1) is the wine that changed our minds about TX wine years ago. The Mourvedrè grape is a flinty, light-bodied wine that, like Cinsault, represents the terroir of TX in a way that other grapes fall disappointingly short of. Like Blend8, prior to bottling, we dosed the beer with deep purple TX Malbec lees to add aroma and depth. Each bottle and keg was conditioned with fresh beer in early May.

This beer is dependent on a strong TX grown wine industry. Currently the majority of winemakers who label themselves Texan ship a varying percentage of fruit from CA and New Mexico to put in their bottles. At NBBCo we agree with sommeliers and winemakers who understand that the climate, soils and weather events define the flavor and character of the final wine. That there is a distinct difference between wine produced from a grape grown in the valleys of a seaside farm in CA vs the mountains in Colorado vs the Hill Country of TX. We commit to using only TX grown fruit in these beers and support HB1514 and SB1833 which would clarify these differences on TX wine labels. For more information
