Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Oskar Blues French’s Mustard Beer (Review)

As someone who really enjoys great beer in convenient packaging, I will always remember my first encounter with a really good beer in a can. Of course it was Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale and when I first sampled it, I knew cans would take off in the craft beer universe.  Jump forward a few years, and after interviewing Dale Katechis (The “Dale” in Dale’s Pale Ale), I knew Oskar Blues was on to something with all-can packaging.

Of course in 2020 we already know that cans are in huge demand by beer consumers and we’ve moved from simple 12oz cans to all sorts of sizes and shapes…but I’ll always remember Oskar Blues as the first.

So naturally I jumped at the opportunity to try another new can coming from Oskar Blues, but this one isn’t just any can or just any beer…

Today’s beer is a collaboration with French’s Mustard and it is simply called French’s Mustard Beer. This is a real beer, and honestly I’m surprised that people even question it given the pickle beers, hot dog beers and everything else out there.

The beer will be a tropical wheat beer and yes it is actually brewed with French’s Yellow Mustard and other natural flavors. Of course I can’t wait to try it out…so off we go…

Oskar Blues French’s Mustard Beer

ABV:  5.2%
Style:  Tropical Wheat Ale
Packaging:  12oz cans (of course!)
Appearance:  Hazy golden yellow mustard color (no lie)
Aroma:   Tropical fruit, citrus, grain and savory spice
Mouthfeel:   Medium carbonation & light bodied
Taste:   Semi-tart tropical fruits, tangerine, moderate pineapple, pleasant earthy spice…and yes yellow mustard flavor (it’s subtle but it’s definitely there).
Overall:  French’s Mustard Beer is a really unique combination of flavors that will have you sipping again and again to not only figure out what flavors you’re tasting, but also to simply enjoy the beer.  The pleasant qualities of a juice-forward wheat ale are nicely balanced by the counterpoint of slightly spicy yellow mustard. This tropical, savory & earthy mix plays with your palate in a really nice way and I reached the bottom of the can before I knew what hit me. Overall this is a really good beer and not at all the gimmick you might be expecting….instead you should expect to be pleasantly surprised.

As a side note, the can looks great and don’t be surprised if someone thinks they’re grabbing the French’s Mustard in your fridge when they see this beer (especially if you add the Oskar Blues French’s Mustard coozie..
