Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Bell’s Brewery 2019 Oberon Day (Review)

I’ve always been a big fan of Bell’s Brewery in Comstock, MI.  They were one of the earliest breweries that I encountered when I first discovered better beer, and to this day they are one of my favorites.  And while most people may immediately think of Hopslam when I mention Bell’s, my mind always goes to Oberon First.

Oberon is an American wheat ale that still to this day has one of the most appealing collection of flavors you’ll find in a wheat beer.  Add in the fact that Oberon is brewed with just 4 ingredients (no fruit or spices) and you’ll be even more amazed at the complexity, depth and drinkability of this beer.
I also love a good story, and when I interviewed our pal Larry Bell on the WILK Friday BeerBuzz to highlight Oberon, he told the story of the original name (Solsun) and the trademark issues it presented.  Larry ultimately renamed the beer to Oberon because he actually played the part of Oberon in 6th grade in Midsummer Night’s Dream school play.  It’s a cool story, and if you listen to the show, you’ll see we actually got Larry to recite some of his Oberon lines from the play!
Jump forward to 2019 and I’m excited to once again welcome Oberon back for it’s yearly release.  With Oberon Day 2019 upon us, I (and Bell’s) thought it would be a fitting tribute to highlight Oberon the beer as well as the cool promo pack Bell’s was kind enough to share.

I look forward to Oberon every year and it has become a ritual for Oberon to travel on vacation with me every spring to celebrate the season (and the beer).  The beer pours a bright gold with and as Bell’s puts it, “the color and scent of a sunny afternoon;” and while there is still snow on the ground here, Oberon helped make it a sunny day, at least on my palate.  This classic wheat ale has loads of complexity with a spicy and fruity character.  There are just enough hops on board to balance it all out and overall the beer has great body and a really drinkable and refreshing finish.  At 5.8%-AbV I find Oberon to be the perfect balance between sessionable and satisfying (and of course fun).  With each sip I’m reminded just how much I like this beer, and just how happy I am that it has returned for another “Oberon Season.”

I should also mention the really cool promo pack that Bell’s Brewery is sharing to celebrate Oberon Day 2019.  Check out the photos to see what I mean.  Of course I enjoyed my Oberon wearing my Oberon sunglasses, using my Oberon koozie, my Oberon pint glass and my Oberon coaster.  The pack also included an Oberon cookie that I’ll be enjoying tonight for desert, and Oberon bottle opener and a box full of orange party confetti and Oberon caution tape.  I love the beer, but it was a lot of fun tasting my way through the party package.
