Mybeerbuzz .com Highlights Allagash Two Lights

After last months sampling of Little Brett & Pick Your Own from Allagash, I couldn’t wait to tear into a new sample hitting mybeerbuzz headquarters from Allagash Brewing in Portland, ME.  My friends and I literally fought over the remaining bottle of Little Brett last time, and based on this beer description, I plan to hide this one for myself.

Today we’re test driving Two Lights and it is a beer brewed with Sauvignon Blanc grape must (and freshly pressed juice).  If that’s not enough fun, Two Lights is fermented with lager and champagne yeast.  This beer evolved from an Allagash brewery-only small-batch release into a larger batch for shipment to Allagash’s entire distribution footprint in 2018.  Named for Two Lights State Park in Maine, this beer was submitted by Allagash employee Mariah Nelson.

Enough chatter…let’s try it out.  Two Lights pours a pale slightly hazy straw color with a really foamy head.  The aromas lead with sparkling grape and just a touch of citrus and pear.  The mouthfeel is prickly and effervescent with loads of carbonation on board, but it finishes soft and somewhat creamy.  Two Lights has a variety of really fruity and pleasant flavors on board, starting with a subtle grape presence followed by pear, apple and a bit of citrusy lemon.  The beer is really crisp and clean and way more drinkable than I was expecting.  Two Lights has a nice balance of sweet and dry with loads of complexity, especially as the beer warms.

Overall I thought Allagash Two Lights was a great example of not only how much a multi-yeast beer can have really good results, but also how innovative Allagash’s brewing team can be.  Both the lager and champagne yeasts contribute to the overall equation of this beer and we really enjoyed every ounce. (and yes I’m saving the 2nd bottle for myself).
