Lancaster Brewing Compares 8-Cents Per Can Price Against 13-Cents Per Bottle

An interesting piece in the Lehigh Valley Live column today on the switch to cans for many breweries. In the post our pal Bill Moore comments on his cost per can versus cost per bottle. Keep in mind Lancaster Brewing is contract brewed out of Lion Brewery so it was interesting to see his 8-cents per can versus 13-cents per bottle comparison. Details from LVL:
The cans Lancaster Brewing uses are lined to keep the beer from absorbing any metallic taste, and the opaque can keeps out light that can turn beer skunky, said Bill Moore, brewmaster there.
Then there are the cost savings. Each can costs Lancaster 8 cents, compared to 13 cents a bottle. And the packaging is simpler per case; Lancaster packages its cans in flatboard sold in a corrugated-cardboard tray. Six-pack bottle carriers, by comparison, require cutting and gluing and come in a “mother case” that costs more than the tray, he said.
