Hood River, Oregon – January 2026

Double Mountain Brewery & Cidery is excited to announce that Hop Lion IPA, Dry Cider, and a new upcoming Czech-style Pilsner will be available in 12-ounce six-packs of shiny, lightweight, adventure-ready recyclable aluminum cans for the first time ever. These cans will be sold at local grocery stores and all Double Mountain locations. Hop Lion IPA and Dry Cider will be available beginning Friday, January 30, with the Czech-style Pilsner following in March.

For the past decade, Double Mountain intentionally resisted canning its beers and ciders while focusing on what it believes is the most earth-friendly package available: the refillable glass bottle. That commitment remains unchanged. Refillables are still at the core of Double Mountain’s identity, and the brewery will continue bottling beer and cider in refillable glass.

At the same time, Double Mountain recognizes that many customers and retailers want their beer and cider in cans, especially for outdoor adventures and places where glass simply isn’t the most practical option. The brewery is embracing that reality and is excited to finally offer a format that customers and retailers have been asking for over many years. It’s a long-anticipated step, and one the brewery is thrilled to finally take.

“For a long time, refillable glass has been the best expression of who we are as a brewery, and that hasn’t changed,” says Matt Swihart, Owner and Brewmaster. “At the same time, we’ve heard our customers loud and clear. Offering Hop Lion, Dry Cider, and Pilsner in cans allows people to take Double Mountain with them into more places, and we’re excited to finally make that happen.”

A Layered Approach to Sustainability

Double Mountain continues to view sustainability as a spectrum, not a single solution. The most sustainable way to enjoy beer or cider will always be in a pub, where there is no packaging, no transport, just the freshest beer possible. Visiting a Double Mountain pub is always encouraged as the first choice.

All Double Mountain cans feature directly printed artwork, avoiding plastic shrink sleeves. While shrink sleeves are common in the industry, they are not recyclable and can interfere with recycling systems. By printing directly onto the can, Double Mountain is choosing a cleaner, more sustainable approach that keeps aluminum in the recycling stream and out of landfills.

Refillable bottles remain the most sustainable packaged option in the beer aisle, and Double Mountain will continue to champion and invest in them. Cans add another responsible option when portability and durability matter. This is not a shift in values, this is an expansion of access, meeting customers where they are: at concerts, on hikes, at picnics, and along the river.

Double Mountain will continue to collect, clean, and refill glass bottles for the foreseeable future. Empty cans and refillable glass bottles may be returned to any Oregon BottleDrop location or directly to Double Mountain pubs. Refillable glass bottles are still part of the brewery’s punch card program, where returns earn discounts toward future tabs in the pubs.

How to Recycle Double Mountain Cans

Empty and rinse cans
Do not crush cans
Use Oregon’s BottleDrop system for your 10-cent refund
Green Bags can be used for convenience
Blue Bags may be used to donate cans to local nonprofits

Pak-Tech carriers are reusable but not curbside recyclable. Please return them to a designated Pak-Tech drop-off location. Double Mountain pubs are one, along with several local breweries.

About the Beers and Cider

Hop Lion
IPA
6.7% Alc/Vol | 65 BU

For the first time ever, our Flagship IPA and most recognizable beer throughout Oregon and Washington, is now in an easy open can. Tropic resin, tangerine, evergreen, and the earthy scent of Northwest petrichor leap from the nose of this proud IPA. Tangelo and fresh bread stalk closely behind, finishing with orange and dank pine.

Dry Cider
Hard Apple Cider
6.6% Alc/Vol

Our most sought after cider, made with apples grown at our very own orchard, is now in an easy open can. Newtown’s and old world cider apples from the Double Mountain Orchard are pressed and fermented on a house yeast strain. We gave it plenty of time to dry out and develop wondrous aromas of juicy pear, lychee, green fruit, and chamomile. It finishes tart, crisp, dry, and quenching.

Pilsner
Czech- Style
4.7% Alc/Vol | 37 BU

A brand new brew for us, we are excited to present our newly imagined Czech-Style Pilsner to our can lineup debut. A great low ABV and non-IPA option. No frills, no gimmicks, no fillers. Just a clean, crisp Czech-style lager to compliment whatever the day throws at you. Classic, time tested, and brewer approved.

Together, these three offerings represent the heart of Double Mountain’s lineup; past, present, and future, now packaged for wherever the day leads. Hop Lion IPA brings the bold, hop-forward character that made it a Northwest staple, Dry Cider delivers orchard-driven simplicity and precision, and the new Czech-Style Pilsner rounds out the lineup with a thoughtful, low-ABV lager built for balance and drinkability. Whether cracked open at a trailhead, shared at a concert, or enjoyed back at the pub, these cans are about expanding access to the same carefully crafted beer and cider Double Mountain has always stood behind, with no shortcuts, no compromises, just more ways to raise a glass. Together.

The Most Sustainable Way to Enjoy Beer & Cider (In Order)

Drink it in the pub first; no packaging, no transport, just the freshest beer possible
Choose refillables second; still the most sustainable option in the beer aisle
Recyclables third; when adventure calls for cans.

“My secret? I enjoy a can of beer now and then, and I hope you do too.” Adds Matt Swihart “Please remember: reuse when able, recycle always.” Cheers to new adventures in 2026!
