Brewmaster Jan Matysiak Joins Texas Ale Project to Lead Brewing Operations

DALLAS, TEXAS- German-born, Weihenstephan-trained Brewmaster, Jan Matysiak joins the Texas Ale

Project team to lead the brewing operations. As a graduate of the University of Munich-Weihenstephan and

most recently Brewmaster of Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, NY, Matysiak takes a scientific and artistic

approach to brewing American craft beer, “Craft brewing is a combination of science, art and inspiration. Back

home the approach is very different, the emphasis is on precision and scientific knowledge gathered over

hundreds of years brewing a few specific styles.” Matysiak continues, “Here in the U.S. there are hundreds of

styles and sub-styles of beers, some of which are very traditional, and many more of them are completely new

styles.”

After graduating in Brewing Science at Weihenstephan, Matysiak

worked for several breweries in Germany, ranging from small brew

pubs to breweries with hundreds-of-thousands of barrels produced

each year. Matysiak used this time to further sharpen his brewing

knowledge in every brewing environment he could find.

After several years Matysiak knew he wanted to continue his brewing

journey, but where? He decided to move to Austin, Texas. “I was

young and adventurous, so I thought, "Why not?" so I came to

America, to Texas, to brew beer.”

When Jan first arrived his first interaction with beer was at Live Oak

Brewery in Austin. He felt comfortable at Live Oak brewing mostly

traditional “continental” styles, and it wasn’t until Matysiak began

tasting American craft beers at places such as the Draft House in Austin

that his craft beer horizons began to expand, “For the first six months I

didn’t really drink anything other than beers I knew from Germany.”

Matysiak continues “In the beginning it was an entirely new world. I

remember the first IPA I had, I was like, WHAT is this?”

Matysiak expands on his first experiences with American craft beer, “Once I began trying different styles of

craft beer, I found myself in a whole new world. As extreme as I originally thought some of the beer styles

were, they won me over rather quickly and now I completely embrace the entire craft beer culture!”

After successfully developing top rated beers and running large scale operations as Brewmaster at Sixpoint

Brewery, Matysiak now finds a new welcoming home back in Texas at Texas Ale Project in Dallas. “We are

very excited to have Jan join our team. His personable nature and motivation to launch a new local brewery with

us has enabled him to fit into the family nicely. We look forward to exciting things to come,” says Kat

Thompson, President of Texas Ale Project.

When asked why he decided to come back to Texas, Matysiak said “In the past few years, Texas has

blossomed into one of the most promising craft beer markets in the United States. I want to be a part of that

scene and make a difference.” With Matysiak on board, the Texas Ale Project team has been actively

developing highly well-crafted, complex beers which they will release later this year.
