Boulevard The Sixth Glass

Boulevard Brewing is bringing back one of its bigger, more distinctive specialty beers, and this time there is a packaging change worth noticing. Boulevard The Sixth Glass, the brewery’s Belgian-style quadrupel ale from Kansas City, Missouri, is returning in 12-ounce bottles, giving this familiar strong ale a new presentation and another chance to get in front of craft beer drinkers who appreciate something with a little more weight.

This is Boulevard The Sixth Glass, and it is not exactly a beer that tries to hide what it is. The newly spotted packaging identifies the beer as a quadrupel ale, with a large, old-fashioned label design that carries the Boulevard name and the familiar Smokestack-era specialty beer personality. The bright orange artwork and oversized lettering make this one stand out, and I like seeing Boulevard keep some of that traditional specialty beer character rather than turning everything into another generic-looking craft beer package.

The biggest detail here is the alcohol content, although there is already a small question that needs answering. The front label lists The Sixth Glass at 10.5% alcohol by volume, while the back label reportedly lists 10.2% ABV. That is not a huge difference in practical terms, but it is a difference, and the brewery should eventually clear up which figure is correct. The established Boulevard product information has previously listed The Sixth Glass at 10.2% ABV and 22 IBUs, so that older specification is worth keeping in mind while we wait for confirmation on the new packaging.

A serious beer. No question.

For anyone unfamiliar with the style, a Belgian quadrupel is generally a bigger, richer ale with substantial malt character, dark fruit impressions, warming alcohol and a sweetness that can be deceptively easy to drink. These beers are not built around aggressive hop bitterness, and that is part of the appeal. The malt, fermentation character and overall balance do most of the talking, especially when the beer has enough strength to develop a more layered flavor profile.

Boulevard has described The Sixth Glass as a deep, mysterious, dark auburn and full-bodied beer with deceptive sweetness. Its established flavor description includes Belgian yeast character, dark fruit, caramel malt and a rich, sweet malt profile. That gives us a pretty good idea of what drinkers should expect from this quadrupel, although I would still like to get a fresh tasting note on the returning 12-ounce bottle before making any assumptions about whether the current version has changed.

The name itself has a little history behind it. Boulevard has connected The Sixth Glass to Hans Christian Andersen’s cautionary story about a series of increasingly ominous glasses. The brewery took that idea and built a beer around it, using the sixth glass as the inspiration for a strong, dark and somewhat mysterious Belgian-style ale. It is a fitting name for a beer that sits well outside the ordinary light lager and easy-drinking IPA categories.

The move to 12-ounce bottles is another interesting piece of this return. Smaller bottles make sense for a beer in this strength range, especially when drinkers are looking for a measured pour rather than a large serving. The new packaging also gives Boulevard an opportunity to put The Sixth Glass back into specialty beer conversations and potentially reach consumers who remember the beer from its earlier appearances.

I am also interested in seeing how widely this one will be distributed. Boulevard has not provided us with confirmed release timing or a complete distribution breakdown yet, so I am not going to guess at arrival dates or availability. For now, we have the returning beer, the new 12-ounce bottle artwork, the quadrupel designation and the ABV discrepancy.

There is still more to come.

Boulevard The Sixth Glass is a good reminder that Boulevard Brewing has never been limited to one particular kind of beer. The Kansas City brewery has produced approachable wheat beers, hop-forward releases, specialty stouts, saisons and stronger Belgian-inspired ales, and this quadrupel belongs firmly in that more traditional specialty beer conversation.

For fans of Boulevard Brewing and Belgian quadrupel ales, this is one worth watching. The 12-ounce bottles look sharp, the style has plenty of character, and the only real question right now is whether the final confirmed alcohol content will be 10.2% or 10.5% ABV. We will keep an eye out for additional release information, including availability and any updated details directly from Boulevard.

Stay tuned.

Boulevard Brewing Company is one of the best-known craft breweries in the American Midwest, with a history that reaches back to 1989 and a strong connection to Kansas City, Missouri. Founded by John McDonald, Boulevard began with a relatively straightforward idea: bring distinctive, flavorful beer back to a region where the brewing selection had become dominated by large national brands. What started as a small brewery operation has developed into one of the most recognizable names in American craft beer, with a portfolio that covers traditional beer styles, modern craft favorites, specialty releases and experimental brewing projects.

The Boulevard story actually began a little before the first beer was delivered. During a trip to France in the mid-1980s, McDonald became interested in the history and variety of European brewing traditions. That experience helped shape his approach to brewing and gave him a reason to pursue something different back home. He eventually began building a brewery in a historic railroad facility along Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, using a vintage Bavarian brewhouse and a collection of equipment that helped turn his plans into an operating brewery.

Boulevard officially delivered its first keg of Pale Ale in November 1989. That first beer was the beginning of a much larger operation, but the brewery did not abandon its original approach as it grew. The company continued to focus on fresh, flavorful beer, combining traditional brewing methods with newer techniques and equipment. Its early releases helped establish Boulevard as a regional favorite, particularly as American craft beer was beginning to expand beyond a relatively small group of independent breweries.

One of Boulevard’s most recognizable early successes was Unfiltered Wheat Beer. Introduced in 1994, the beer helped bring a different style of craft brewing to a much wider audience. Its cloudy appearance, wheat character and refreshing profile made it an important part of Boulevard’s identity, and it remains one of the brewery’s best-known offerings. The popularity of that beer helped create opportunities for additional growth and gave Boulevard the foundation to explore more ambitious brewing projects.

As the brewery expanded, Boulevard began developing a broader lineup of specialty beers. The Smokestack Series became an important part of that effort, allowing the brewers to work with stronger styles, more complex recipes and beers that were not necessarily designed for everyday drinking. Releases such as Tank 7 American Saison, Dark Truth Stout and The Sixth Glass helped establish the brewery as more than a producer of accessible regional craft beer. These beers demonstrated an interest in traditional European brewing influences while allowing Boulevard to put its own interpretation on familiar styles.

The Sixth Glass is particularly representative of that approach. Its Belgian-style quadrupel identity, dark auburn color, full body and rich malt character place it among the brewery’s more substantial specialty beers. The style draws on Belgian brewing traditions, where stronger ales often combine expressive yeast character, dark fruit flavors and considerable malt depth. Boulevard’s interpretation gives those elements a recognizable identity of its own and has helped make The Sixth Glass an interesting release for drinkers who enjoy bigger, more traditional ales.

Boulevard also continued investing in its brewing facilities as demand increased. A major expansion in the mid-2000s brought a much larger brewhouse into operation, providing additional capacity and more room for experimentation. Rather than moving away from its original Kansas City home, the brewery continued expanding its existing facility, maintaining a connection to the neighborhood where the company began.

In 2014, Boulevard became part of the Duvel Moortgat family of breweries. The partnership connected Boulevard with an international brewing organization that has extensive experience with Belgian beer traditions, specialty brewing and established international brands. Boulevard nevertheless maintained its Kansas City identity and continued developing beers for its existing customers while introducing new releases to a broader audience.

Today, Boulevard Brewing produces a wide variety of beers and other beverages, with familiar names such as Pale Ale, Unfiltered Wheat, Tank 7, Space Camper and its specialty Smokestack offerings. Its releases range from approachable lagers and wheat beers to hazy IPAs, saisons, stouts, barrel-aged specialties and Belgian-inspired ales. That variety has allowed Boulevard to remain relevant as consumer preferences and the American beer market continue changing.

The brewery also maintains an interest in sustainability and community involvement. Its initiatives have included extensive recycling and composting efforts, renewable energy installations and partnerships supporting glass recycling in the Kansas City region. Those programs reflect an effort to make the brewery’s operations more responsible while maintaining its place in the community.

For visitors, Boulevard offers brewery tours, a tasting experience and its Tours & Rec Center, providing an opportunity to learn more about the brewing process and sample beers from the portfolio. The brewery remains an important destination for Kansas City beer fans and visitors interested in the history of American craft brewing.

More than three decades after its first keg of Pale Ale, Boulevard Brewing Company continues to balance established beer traditions with new ideas. Whether it is an iconic wheat beer, a modern IPA, a barrel-aged stout or a strong Belgian-style quadrupel like The Sixth Glass, the brewery continues to explore different ways of making flavorful beer.
