Today I have some new distribution news coming from Karl Strauss in San Diego, California:

zzubreebym

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Karl Strauss Brewing Company, San Diego’s first post-Prohibition craft brewery, continues the growth of its distribution arm, Karl Strauss Distribution (KSD). KSD and Brewery X have entered into a distribution agreement that makes the Anaheim brewery the 14th brand in KSD’s portfolio. Brewery X draft and packaged beer will be distributed by KSD within San Diego County.

Brewery X beers include Slap & Tickle West Coast IPA, Dictionary Roulette Hazy IPA, Battlesnakes Bohemian Pilsner (Bronze Medal winner at 2022 Great American Beer Festival), a rotating West Coast Citra Loves Series, and hard seltzers including Huckleberry, Baja Sipper, and Succulent Sipper. The selections are available in San Diego restaurants, bars, and retail outlets, including grocery stores and Total Wine & More locations.

“Karl Strauss Distributing is proud to distribute brands from all over Southern California, from San Diego up to Los Angeles,” said Karl Strauss Chief Operating Officer Chad Heath. “We’re thrilled to bring on Brewery X, an iconic Orange County brewery, and share its products with more San Diegans. Brewery X’s portfolio helps us expand our offerings, grow their brand in San Diego, and continue building a link between San Diego and Orange County independent breweries.”

Launched in 2018, KSD utilizes its extensive network to catalyze growth for partner brands that share an affinity for quality craft beer. KSD distributes Karl Strauss, Black Plague Brewing, Booze Brothers Brewing Co., Laguna Beer Co., Fieldwork Brewing Co., Bay City Brewing Co., Hodad’s Brewing Co., Creature Comforts Brewing Co., Knotty Brewing, Owl Farm Unique Fermentations, Newtopia Cyder, Bambucha Hard Kombucha, and Melograno Craft Cocktails.

“Most of our team cut their teeth in craft beer for legacy brands like Pizza Port, Ballast Point, and Stone,” said Brewery X Chief Brewing Officer Trevor Walls. “I think a lot of the current beer industry doesn’t know about our San Diego roots, but once we tell our story to local beer folks, they tend to perk up a bit and seem more receptive to our brand, beer, and goals.”

Brewery X is an independent, family-owned Brewery that opened in Anaheim, CA in 2019. Brewery X has quickly gained recognition in Southern California for its West Coast IPAs, Classic European beers styles, and one-of-a-kind hard seltzers. In addition to the expansive original biergarten and brewery operation in Anaheim, Brewery X has expanded with taprooms/restaurants in Angel Stadium (home of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels), Honda Center (home of National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks), Ontario International Airport (ONT), and Sheraton San Diego Resort on Harbor Island.

MY LIFE’S WORK HAS BEEN BREWING AND IF I HAD TO DO IT OVER AGAIN, I WOULD PURSUE THE SAME PATH, WHICH IS TO SAY I HAVE NO REGRETS.
— Karl M. Strauss (October 5, 1912 – December 21, 2006)

Born in 1912 in Minden, Germany, Karl Strauss was immersed in the brewing world from an early age, playing among beer barrels and hops at his father’s brewery. Pursuing his passion, he attended the Technical University of Munich-Weihenstephan at 19, earning a degree and Master Brewer certification. In 1939, fleeing the political climate of Nazi Germany, Strauss emigrated to America, landing a job at Pabst Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His contributions, particularly the reformulation of Pabst’s Blue Ribbon beer in the 1950s, significantly boosted the company’s sales and launched PBR into a new era, leading to his eventual role as Vice President of Production until his retirement in 1983. However, Karl was never known to idle…

In 1986 San Diego was void of the thriving beer scene it has today. In fact, the city hadn’t seen fresh beer since Prohibition, and the term “craft beer” didn’t exist. Strauss was then embarking on a consulting career, playing a huge role into the next chapter of this story. Enter Chris Cramer (Karl’s cousin) and Matt Rattner; two college buddies eager to change the status quo. Inspired by a brewpub Chris came upon while backpacking through Australia, the pair had a dream: bring local, handcrafted beer back to San Diego. With the help of Brewmaster Karl Strauss himself, it was on February 2, 1989 that we officially opened our doors in downtown San Diego and launched the city’s craft beer industry. As our brewing company flourished, so did the industry as a whole.

Karl played a crucial role in designing the brewery, training staff, and developing beer recipes, actively participating in its operations as Master Brewer until his passing in 2006, cementing his status as the Godfather of Beer. As for us? With 128 major medals under our belt since 2009, we continue to live his legacy and pioneer the independent brewing scene by crafting innovative beers across a wide range of styles. Brews like Tower X, Follow the Sun, and Boat Shoes have catapulted the brewery into a new era; while beers such as Red Trolley Ale—one of the most awarded beers in the world—stand as a testament to Karl’s brewing excellence.
