Anchor Brewing Celebrates the San Francisco Original that Started the Craft Beer Movement with the Return of Anchor Steam Week

San Francisco, CA (August 1, 2019) – For the fifth year, Anchor Brewing Company will celebrate America’s first craft beer, Anchor Steam® Beer, with the return of Anchor Steam Week on August 11-18, 2019.  In 2015, the Mayor of San Francisco proclaimed the third week of August to be Anchor Steam Week, celebrating Anchor’s revolutionary role in the American craft beer movement and continued commitment to brewing in San Francisco.  This summer, Anchor Steam Week will feature celebrations across the country to honor Anchor’s 123-year history.

“We take this week to show appreciation for the beer that got us here.  Anchor Steam has been the stronghold of our brewery since the 19^th century. Drinking an Anchor Steam is like drinking a glass of San Francisco history,” said Anchor’s Brewmaster, Scott Ungermann.

Although Anchor Steam’s taste has never changed, fans can enjoy the beer in a variety of appearances today.  Recently, Anchor Brewing Company released the Anchor Steam Artist Label, designed by award-winning San Francisco artist and writer, Paul Madonna.  The limited-time packaging celebrates the artistic heritage of San Francisco through two of its most well-known icons, the Golden Gate Bridge and Anchor Steam Beer.

In February, Anchor Steam was inducted into the inaugural class of San Francisco Chronicle’s NorCal Beer Hall of Fame for its influence on craft brewing in America.  Inductees were determined based on both expert and reader voting.  The San Francisco Small Business Commission also recently unanimously decided to honor Anchor Brewing Company with the Legacy Business Award, recognizing Anchor as a longstanding, community-serving business and valuable cultural asset to the city.

This month, Anchor Brewing Company celebrates its 40^th year operating within its current brewery on Potrero Hill.  In 1965, Fritz Maytag acquired and revived the struggling Anchor Brewery.  Anchor Steam (4.9% ABV) was the first handcrafted beer to be revitalized in America after Prohibition, starting a revolution in beer that originated today’s craft beer movement.  In 1971, Fritz Maytag began bottling Anchor Steam Beer—the first bottled Anchor Steam in modern times.  The distinctly flavored San Francisco original has been classically handcrafted in Anchor’s copper brewhouse for 123 years and counting.  Anchor Steam is created by fermenting lager yeast at warmer temperatures, which puts it in a beer style category of its own.  Put simply, Anchor Steam is a refreshing, well-balanced beer that blends the crispness of a lager and fruitiness of an ale.
