Today I have a first look at another intriguing new beer coming from Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. in Decorah, Iowa, and this one takes the brewery in a darker, more seasonally inspired direction. Watcher of the Woods is a new spiced dark lager that combines a rich amber appearance with warm baking-spice character and the crisp, refreshing finish expected from a well-crafted lager.

According to the new label, Watcher of the Woods is designed as a spiced dark lager that lends a rich amber hue to the glass. The brewery describes the beer as bringing warm notes to the senses with “just a kiss of baking spices” while maintaining a crisp lager finish. That combination could make Watcher of the Woods an especially interesting release for drinkers who enjoy darker beers but don’t necessarily want the heavier body or elevated alcohol content associated with imperial stouts and strong ales.

A 4.5% Dark Lager With Baking Spices

Watcher of the Woods will arrive at a very approachable 4.5% ABV, putting it firmly in sessionable territory. Rather than overwhelming the lager with intense spice, the label suggests a restrained approach, using baking spices to complement the beer’s malt character while allowing the clean lager profile to remain prominent.

The result should be a beer that bridges several categories. Fans of dark lagers, amber lagers, seasonal beers, spiced beers and traditional lager brewing may all find something to appreciate here. The rich amber color promises malt depth, while the crisp finish should help keep Watcher of the Woods refreshing and easy drinking.

The label also identifies the beer as unfiltered, noting that sediment is normal. That detail is worth highlighting because unfiltered beer can retain more of the natural character produced during fermentation and conditioning, while also creating a slightly different visual appearance in the glass.

Toppling Goliath Continues Expanding Its Lager Lineup

Watcher of the Woods also fits into an increasingly interesting side of the Toppling Goliath portfolio. While the Decorah brewery is internationally recognized for hop-forward beers and sought-after barrel-aged stouts, recent releases have demonstrated a broader interest in lagers and more approachable styles.

MyBeerBuzz recently reported on Toppling Goliath’s Joy Top Pilsner, another lager-focused release, as well as the brewery’s work on a Spiced Dark Lager, making Watcher of the Woods particularly notable as part of the brewery’s evolving lager program.

The new beer will be packaged in 12-ounce cans, according to the label, giving Watcher of the Woods a convenient format for retail shelves, refrigerators, backyard gatherings and seasonal beer fans looking for something darker without stepping into high-ABV territory.

For now, Toppling Goliath Watcher of the Woods remains a release to watch. With its 4.5% ABV, toasted dark-lager profile, rich amber color, subtle baking spices, unfiltered presentation and crisp lager finish, this could become an appealing seasonal option for fans looking for something different from the brewery.

Stay tuned for official release timing, distribution information and tasting notes as Watcher of the Woods gets closer to hitting shelves and taps.

Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. is one of Iowa’s best-known craft breweries, with its home base in Decorah, Iowa, and a reputation that extends far beyond the Midwest. Founded by Clark and Barbara Lewey in 2009 following the success of their homebrewing operation, Toppling Goliath rapidly developed into a nationally recognized brewery known for bold IPAs, barrel-aged stouts, specialty lagers, collaborations and highly sought-after limited releases. MyBeerBuzz has followed the brewery’s growth and new beer releases for years, including its legendary Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout, Pseudo Sue, King Sue and numerous specialty beers.

One of Toppling Goliath’s biggest strengths is its willingness to explore different beer styles while maintaining a strong identity. The brewery became particularly famous for hop-forward beers, with Pseudo Sue, King Sue, Pompeii and Hopsmack! helping establish Toppling Goliath as a major name among American IPA drinkers. At the same time, its barrel-aged stout program has attracted collectors and serious craft beer enthusiasts looking for rare and intensely flavored releases.

In 2026, Toppling Goliath has continued demonstrating that its brewing ambitions extend well beyond IPAs and imperial stouts. The brewery has introduced and announced a diverse collection of beers, including NA Pseudo Sue, KrushMo Pseudo Sue, Joy Top Pilsner and several collaborations.

That expanding portfolio makes the arrival of Watcher of the Woods particularly interesting. The new 4.5% spiced dark lager demonstrates Toppling Goliath’s ability to move into a more traditional, malt-focused category while adding a distinctive seasonal personality. The label’s description of rich amber color, warm baking spices and a crisp lager finish suggests a beer built around balance rather than sheer intensity.

Toppling Goliath has also developed an impressive collaboration portfolio. Recent MyBeerBuzz coverage includes partnerships with Firestone Walker, Xül Beer Co., Lua Brewing, Tired Hands Brewing and Fidens Brewing, illustrating the brewery’s willingness to work with other respected craft breweries across the country.

For beer travelers, Toppling Goliath’s Decorah location has become an important destination within Iowa’s craft beer scene. The brewery’s rotating lineup, taproom releases, packaged beer and specialty releases provide visitors with opportunities to experience beers that may not always be widely available.

Whether the beer is a legendary IPA, barrel-aged stout, experimental collaboration, non-alcoholic pale ale or a carefully constructed lager, Toppling Goliath continues to build its reputation through variety and brewing ambition. Watcher of the Woods adds another chapter to that story, offering fans a darker, spiced and highly approachable lager that could become an especially interesting seasonal release.
