One big mistake many new bettors make when wagering in the NFL is that they believe that all sportsbooks have the same odds. They do not. The same NFL game can be on two different sportsbooks’ lines, with different point spreads, moneylines, totals, prop prices, and bonus rules. Such differences are relevant to consumers because they show that they need to compare products and services. This is no different for craft beer lovers, who enjoy trying a variety of breweries, tap lists, and seasonal beers, and sampling the experience that best suits their preferences.

So it is well to be well-informed because, if there are any minor differences, they can make all the difference to the overall enjoyment. The difference may be insignificant when you’re simply watching the game, but when you’re talking about the bankroll of an individual player over the course of an entire football season, it could be a big difference. One of the easiest to understand concepts for the novice gamer is why NFL odds change, especially before he or she starts wagering real cash.

Sportsbooks Set Odds Based on Risk, Not Just Predictions

A sportsbook isn’t just attempting to guess the result of an NFL game. It is also risk management in terms of finances. When the odds or point spreads move, the sportsbook is likely trying to find a balance between the bets on both sides of the game, with the hope of getting more action on the other side. That’s why it is not uncommon for a team to go from a 3-point favorite early in the week to 3.5 or 4 points in favor at kickoff.

Similar market movements can also be seen during major events such as the NFL draft, when betting interest and new information can quickly influence odds. The lesson for novices: odds are not determinate. If one likes a number early in the week, waiting could either help the price or hurt it. If this is a novice’s first time betting, he or she should compare the same matchup at multiple sportsbooks. Spreads with a half-point difference are important in football games, as common spreads like 3, 6, 7, and 10 are found in lots of games.

The Vig Changes the Real Cost of a Bet

The sportsbook’s commission is what it calls its “vig” or juice. The typical NFL point spread could be -110 on both sides, which means that a bettor has to risk $110 for $100. There is some variation among sportsbooks regarding the price of the same sports event, with some offering -105 and others +115. The difference is the amount of the wagers. For a bettor who’s just making one bet at a time, the spread may not be significant. But this may make a big difference in the long run when you place more than 100 wagers, paying -115 instead of -105. That’s why some seasoned punters pay much more attention to the price than the pick. Making a good NFL bet isn’t just about picking the correct team. It’s the study of finding the maximum number possible.

Popular Teams Often Have Worse Prices

With a large fan base, NFL teams can be subject to significant public betting, particularly during prime-time games. Regardless of the game, other teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers are the ones that receive the attention. If there is a big advantage for the public, the sportsbook may adjust the price. This can lead to false odds. For novices, it’s an unsafe bet to place only on teams that you’re familiar with. A popular team can come out on top, but it may not be a good sportsbook value. What’s a smarter way to go about it is to look at the odds and see if it’s what they mean or the people who were hyping up the match.

Player Props Usually Have Higher Margins

NFL player props are often appealing to many new online gambling players because they’re easy to understand. A bettor can take a wager and place it on whether a quarterback can throw over a certain number of yards, whether a running back will score a touchdown, or perhaps whether a wide receiver will have a certain number of receptions. These markets are entertaining, but may have a bigger margin on the sportsbook compared to the normal spread or totals. This means that bettors should do some comparison shopping of prop prices. A sportsbook can have a receiver touchdown prop at +140 and the other at +165. The bet is the same, but the payout is not. Player props are best suited for players who are new to the game, and should be compared in price prior to betting.

Live Betting Odds Move Faster Than Pregame Odds

Live NFL betting has additionally developed into one of the largest features within online gambling. Sportsbooks make countless adjustments to odds throughout a game based on all kinds of factors, including injuries, drives, turnovers, and scores. The reason these live odds can change so drastically is that each sportsbook employs different trading models and responds at different speeds. This opens up opportunities but also risks. Bettors who are new to the game shouldn’t rush into betting without knowing the new game conditions.

A team’s sluggish performance could cause it to appear to be a tempting group, but at the live price, it may have factored in the rebound. One of the easiest tips for beginners is to stop and think before confirming a live bet, before asking if the new odds are worth playing at the time, or if it’s just an exciting bet. Measurable decisions will be more effective in the long-term. Brewers and beer with the biggest bar drinkers share the same love for thoughtful choices, and they are not just making decisions based on the hottest trend or flashy marketing. Beer connoisseurs take time to consider what is in the glass, starting with the beer’s creation and finishing with its taste.

Using BetOnline as an Example

BetOnline is one example of a gambling site that combines NFL betting with online casino games, poker, racebook betting, and esports under one account. GamblingNerd.com notes that BetOnline has operated since 2001 and offers a full suite of gambling products, including sportsbook, casino, poker, racebook, and esports options. For NFL bettors, that all-in-one structure matters because it allows users to move between sports betting markets and other online gambling products without creating separate accounts. BetOnline is also listed by GamblingNerd.com as one of the recommended NFL sportsbooks, specifically noted as a sportsbook option for mobile NFL betting.

The site’s broader feature set is useful for explaining why sportsbooks compete in different ways. Some platforms try to win players with mobile usability. Others focus on bonus offers, betting limits, live betting menus, or casino integration. When comparing NFL odds, beginners should not only ask which site offers the biggest bonus. They should also ask whether the sportsbook regularly posts competitive spreads, moneylines, props, and totals.

Bonuses Can Change the Value of an NFL Bet

Sportsbook bonuses add to the enjoyment of NFL wagers, however simply under ideal conditions. Sometimes, a new player’s bankroll can be extended by a deposit match, free bet, or reload bonus. BUT some bonuses may require a minimum bet, have a set game requirement, a minimum price, or a time limit. In fact, bettors may get a sportsbook bonus, only to find a couple of NFL props or parlays are not countable in the wager bettors are required to create. A football wagerer, for instance, may be offered a sportsbook bonus, only to discover that some NFL props or parlays are not the ones that will count towards the wager that bettors are required to make.

This is why it is important for new players to read the rules of the bonus prior to depositing. It is sometimes better to receive a smaller bonus that is obviously earned with the correct criteria than a bigger bonus where the conditions are challenging. The “Promotions” section on BetOnline’s website showcases bonuses for sports betting, casino, poker, and race betting, a testament to the number of online gambling sites that offer cross-product promotions to incentivize players.

Better NFL Odds Usually Come From Line Shopping

Line shopping means comparing the same bet across multiple sportsbooks before placing it. This is one of the easiest habits for beginners to build. If one sportsbook offers the Chiefs moneyline at -145 and another offers -135, the second price is better for the bettor. If one sportsbook lists an over/under at 47.5 and another has 48.5, the better option depends on whether the bettor likes the over or under. Line shopping does not require advanced betting knowledge. It simply requires checking more than one price before clicking submit. In online gambling, small differences matter because every bet has a cost.

Safe Online Gambling Tips for New NFL Bettors

For newbies, betting on the NFL should be a business, rather than a sure bet for profit. For those new to the world of gambling, it is crucial to determine if the website has a successful track record, straightforward banking policies, dependable customer support, and honest and transparent bonus terms. When evaluating online gambling sites, GamblingNerd.com’s review model evaluates gambling sites based on the following: Games, Banking, Bonus Terms, Security, support, navigation, and mobile performance.  It’s also important for bettors to establish a set amount to bet on before the NFL week even starts.

That should be money that they can spend if they want to. Don’t try to catch up on an unlucky Sunday – it is one of the quickest ways to make bad decisions. It’s also a great idea to refrain from wagering on every game that’s played on television. But with the NFL schedule, there is a lot of temptation, and oftentimes, selective betting will be your best means to making your best choice. There’s no point in playing without knowing the rules and conditions for withdrawing from the game.

Players must familiarize themselves with the rules and conditions of withdrawal before they make any deposit, particularly if they are playing at an offshore gambling site. Other payout conditions, such as processing periods, payout limits, identity verification, and payment options, can also differ significantly. Lastly, gamers who are new to the game should make use of responsible gaming features, if they are provided. The limits placed on deposits, session reminders, and the cooling-off period help to keep online gambling in check and recreational.
