The 1845 Connection: The year 1845 refers to the date John Graves Mattingly opened his first distillery in Kentucky, Registered Distillery #2, which historians believe may have been the first registered distillery in the state.
Innovation: John Graves Mattingly is credited with perfecting the continuous-flow column still, a technology that revolutionized 19th-century bourbon production by allowing for more efficient, high-volume distilling.

Modern Founding: The current brand was established in 2010 by Jeff Mattingly (a sixth-generation descendant) as “Bourbon 30” in Georgetown, KY. In 2023, it rebranded to J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery and relocated to its current 23,000-square-foot facility in Frankfort.

Key Products and Techniques

Double-Staving™: This is the distillery’s signature process, which involves adding extra charred oak staves to the whiskey during maturation. This increases surface area contact, imparting deep flavors and a darker color that makes younger whiskey taste significantly older.
