1620 Distilling is a small-batch bourbon distillery in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, founded by a family that honors the legacy of their ancestor, George Thorpe, who came to America in 1620. Thorpe learned to distill corn from Native Americans and became known as the “Grandfather of Corn Whiskey”. The company initially sourced its products but plans to begin distilling its own whiskey on-site soon.

In 1620, George Thorpe, our 7th great-grandfather, arrived in America with the intention of establishing a college. However, his legacy would grow far beyond education. Upon meeting the Native Americans of the region, George was introduced to their most vital crop—corn. In the fall of that year, he made a groundbreaking decision: substituting corn for barley to distill America’s first corn whiskey. This innovation earned George the title of the “Grandfather of Corn Whiskey,” not just in our family, but in American history.


Today, we proudly carry on George’s legacy, honoring four centuries of tradition by crafting our own version of that “soe good drink,” a bourbon that blends history, craftsmanship, and bold flavor.
