Avery Releases Barrel Aged Series Fimbulvvinter

The newest addition to our Barrel Aged Series is a beast fit for winter. Fimbulvvinter takes its name from the legendary Norse winter, a long and harsh season preceding the apocalypse. Number 49 in the series will enjoy a limited national release and should be arriving on shelves soon. It is available in bottles and on tap now at our Boulder brewery.

Fimbulvvinter clocked in at a modest 16.9% ABV and hearkens back to 5 Monks, our first attempt at a Belgian quintuple from 2014. This time around, we aged this Belgian beast in rum barrels and the result was unlike anything we’ve brewed before. In Fimbulvvinter, the spicy character from both the rum barrel and the Belgian yeast shine. Chief Barrel Herder Andy Parker wanted to push the barrel flavor to the forefront, without adjuncts to distract. This allowed flavors of winter spice and pineapple upside-down cake to emerge— a cozy blanket to warm your soul during an apocalyptic winter (or just a chilly snow day).

Parker recommends enjoying Fimbulvvinter now. The flavors from the yeast and the barrel are robust and delicious. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t cellar it, too! Our advice is to enjoy one bottle right away and save one to cellar for a few months — the best of both worlds!
