Label Text:

“Western Roots is a collab with the first native American women-owned brewery, Bow & Arrow Brewing of Albuquerque, NM. This beer beautifully connects a Belgian-inspired farmhouse ale with sustainable brewing practices by featuring the Kernza grain – known for its water efficiency, carbon storage and 10-foot deep roots.”

About Bow & Arrow Brewing:
SHYLA SHEPPARD – FOUNDER | President & ceo

After nearly a decade of investing in and supporting other entrepreneur’s dreams, Shyla left her position with a social impact investing firm in late 2013 to pursue filling her own niche in the craft beer industry. With a love for craft beer, brewing, entertaining and design, along with the support of her partner, family and friends, she took on the challenge of developing Bow & Arrow from the ground up. As Founder and CEO, Shyla has been responsible for setting the vision for Bow & Arrow and for the nitty gritty details of development and execution of a business plan, financing strategy, securing capital, building a team, contract negotiations, site selection, and design/development of the brewery and two taprooms.

Shyla was born and raised on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota, where she is a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Nation). She earned her Economics degree from Stanford University and professional background includes nearly a decade of investing and business experience as well as corporate and non-profit board directorships. Shyla enjoys bringing a diverse perspective to the craft beer industry.

“Growing up, I have fond memories of my Magoo, my Grandma, working in her garden, making our traditional foods and sharing stories of our people. These experiences ingrained in me an appreciation for the bounty of the land, its connection to a way of life and to our history. In many ways, I see incorporating Indigenous ingredients and sharing our connections to them as a way of reclaiming our agricultural histories and foodways.” – Shyla Sheppard

Missy

MISSY BEGAY – CO-FOUNDER | CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Inspired by the quintessential wonder of the Southwest, Missy leads branding & marketing and design development. She was born in Albuquerque and raised on the Navajo (Diné) Nation. A granddaughter of Navajo silversmiths & weavers, Missy strives for artistic balance within her medicine profession and is an avid seeker of dirt road photography projects.

Missy enjoys researching desert botanical plants, storytelling and exploring the Southwest in her Land Cruiser. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Stanford University and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of New Mexico. She serves on the UC Davis Tapping Potential Diversity Scholarship Advisory Council

Samuel Arredondo – HEAD BREWER

Samuel (aka Sam) was born and raised in Burbank, CA. He earned his bachelor of science degree in Biology from Cal State University, Monterey Bay. After college, Sam looked to expand on his biology knowledge and set his sights on the brewing industry in San Diego, where his career spanning the last seven years included working at White Labs and most recently at Harland Brewing. His love of craft beer grew exponentially after completing both the Science of Brewing program at UC San Diego and Business of Craft Beer program at San Diego State University, respectively. Throughout his career Sam has developed a strong creative background, an understanding of beer culture through community, and an appreciation for classic styles (with the occasional wild & whacky ales under his sleeve). While remaining an avid homebrewer, he also enjoys discovering/grooving to new music, exploring the outdoors, as well as making beats on the side (he’s a Hip Hop junkie). If he’s not at the brewery, you’ll find Sam playing pickleball, working out, or enjoying the company of his family and friends.

Don

DON James – photographer

A proud Navajo born in Gallup, New Mexico, and raised in Prewitt, New Mexico, Don James is a lover of beer and photography. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in photography from The University of New Mexico and has done freelance work for several well-known companies, such as Nike and The James Beard Foundation. He is the author of the award-winning photo book One Nation, One Year and has been director of photography at Albuquerque The Magazine for more than 15 years. If he’s not documenting life in the Burque with his Nikon or checking out a new brewery, he enjoys volunteering in the community, cutting down big trees for fire wood, playing the blues on his piano, hunting with his longbow on the Rez, reading, hanging out with his grandma, and cruisin’ his flatbed diesel.

About New Belgium Brewing

New Belgium Brewing was founded in 1991 in Fort Collins, CO, by Kim Jordan, a social worker, who built her company the only way a social worker would: People first. Over the past three decades, New Belgium has turned that ethos into a unique Human Powered Business model through practices that foster a culture defined by individual empowerment and collaborative action that drives better business results in the long term. New Belgium expanded to Asheville, NC, in 2016 and Daleville, VA, in 2023, and in 2021 acquired Bell’s Brewery, based in Kalamazoo, MI. The business’ people-centric model has led New Belgium to become the most popular and fastest-growing American craft brewer today. New Belgium is famous for Fat Tire Ale and Voodoo Ranger IPA (America’s #1 IPA brand), along with year-round favorites like Dominga Mimosa Sour, La Folie Sour Brown Ale. New Belgium Brewing is a well-known craft brewery based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Founded in 1991 by Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan, New Belgium is recognized for its innovation in brewing and its commitment to sustainability. The brewery gained early recognition with its flagship beer, Fat Tire Amber Ale, which remains one of the most popular craft beers in the U.S.

Here are some key highlights about New Belgium Brewing:

  1. Flagship Beers: Aside from Fat Tire, New Belgium produces a variety of other popular beers, such as Voodoo Ranger IPA, Citradelic Tangerine IPA, and La Folie Sour Brown Ale.

  2. Innovative Brewing: New Belgium is known for pushing boundaries, often creating unique and experimental beers, including sours and barrel-aged brews. They were one of the early craft breweries to focus on sour beer production.

  3. Sustainability: The brewery has a strong focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. They were one of the first large-scale breweries to achieve carbon neutrality and use renewable energy sources in their operations. They also strive for zero-waste operations and focus on water conservation.

  4. Ownership: In 2019, New Belgium Brewing was acquired by Lion Little World Beverages, a subsidiary of the Australian beverage company Lion, which is itself owned by Kirin Holdings. This move allowed New Belgium to expand its reach globally while retaining its independent craft brewery vibe.

  5. Community and Culture: New Belgium is known for its vibrant company culture, which emphasizes employee ownership, social responsibility, and community engagement. The brewery has an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), meaning many of its workers are also shareholders.

  6. Brewery Tours and Location: New Belgium’s Fort Collins brewery offers tours to visitors, allowing beer lovers to learn about the brewing process, the company’s history, and the sustainability efforts they put in place. They also have a second location in Asheville, North Carolina, which further expanded their reach.
