For 15 years, Mudhook Brewing Company has been part of the craft beer story in York, Pennsylvania, building a loyal following around locally brewed beer, food, community events and the kind of neighborhood atmosphere that is increasingly difficult to recreate. Now, one of York’s longtime brewing institutions is entering a new chapter.

Founder Jeff Lau is ready to retire, and Mudhook Brewing Company is officially being offered for sale. For an entrepreneur, brewer or hospitality professional looking for an established craft brewery and brewpub operation, this could represent an opportunity to take over a business that already has a history, customer base, equipment, traditions and name recognition in downtown York.

But this isn’t simply about buying a brewery. Mudhook has spent 15 years creating traditions that have become part of its identity, from its annual beach party and New Year’s Eve pint drop to scavenger hunts, bar crawls, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, Mug Club, First Fridays and Piano Man. The next owner won’t just be purchasing restaurant equipment and bar supplies, they’ll have the opportunity to continue a York craft beer tradition.

Here is the information currently available about the Mudhook Brewing Company opportunity.

Related Mudhook Brewing news from mybeerbuzz.com:
Mudhook Brewing Company has been part of the MyBeerBuzz story for years, from our coverage of Mudhook’s Live Bait Amber Ale, Deep Sea Stout and Panfish Pale Ale to the WILK Friday BeerBuzz appearance featuring Mudhook Brewing DIPA with Jeff Lau and Andrew Staub; now, as Jeff Lau prepares to retire, those stories take on a different meaning because they document a piece of York’s craft beer history that is looking for its next owner.

About Mudhook Brewing Company:

Mudhook Brewing Company is a York, Pennsylvania craft brewery and brewpub that was established in 2010 and has spent approximately 15 years building a presence in the local beer and hospitality community. Founded by Jeff Lau, Mudhook developed its identity around handcrafted beer, a neighborhood pub atmosphere, food, community gatherings and recurring events that encouraged customers to make the brewery part of their regular routine.

Located in York, Pennsylvania, Mudhook became part of the city’s growing craft beer scene during an important period of development for local brewing. The brewery’s early beers included offerings such as Live Bait Amber Ale, Deep Sea Stout and Panfish Pale Ale, beers that helped establish Mudhook’s identity as a small, independent Pennsylvania brewery producing a range of traditional and approachable craft beer styles. MyBeerBuzz documented those beers and their approved keg labels more than a decade ago.

Mudhook’s significance also extends beyond its beer list. The brewery has built a reputation around events and community traditions, including an annual beach party, New Year’s Eve pint drop, scavenger hunts, bar crawls, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, Mug Club, First Fridays and Piano Man. These recurring events helped create the type of customer loyalty that can be especially valuable for an independent brewpub.

The brewery has also been part of the regional craft beer conversation through MyBeerBuzz and the WILK Friday BeerBuzz radio show. In April 2016, Jeff Lau and Andrew Staub joined the program for a discussion of Mudhook Brewing DIPA, adding another chapter to the brewery’s long relationship with the local craft beer community.

For 15 years, Mudhook Brewing Company has combined craft brewing, a brewpub restaurant, beer events and York community culture under one roof. That combination is now available to a new owner as Jeff Lau prepares for retirement.

The sale represents an unusual opportunity because the prospective buyer would inherit an established business rather than beginning with an empty building and a new name. Existing restaurant equipment, bar supplies, brewing history, customer traditions and event concepts provide a foundation that could be developed in numerous directions.

The next owner could maintain the Mudhook identity, expand its brewing program, refresh the restaurant, introduce new beer styles, develop additional events or simply continue the traditions that have made the brewpub a familiar destination in York.

Most importantly, Mudhook Brewing Company already has a story. Fifteen years of brewing, events, friendships and community involvement cannot be recreated overnight. The challenge—and opportunity—for the next owner will be taking that history and combining it with the energy and creativity necessary to move Mudhook into its next chapter.

For anyone interested in acquiring an established York, Pennsylvania brewery, brewpub and restaurant operation, Mudhook Brewing Company is now looking for someone ready to carry that tradition forward.
