Atomic Mom: The Battle of Boring Beer Begins with a Discovery

Director Seifried, never prone to vacillation (or adequate forethought, in the view of some lab personnel), dispatched a squad of elite agents to Columbia as soon as his intercom had gone silent. Before the day’s sun had set, a sample of the mysterious liquid was back at Ozark Elemental Site #42. Dr. Sandy Brewer set the team in motion, “Dr. Courtney, alert all personnel of elevated Safety Protocol Status Code Ten; we have no idea of this liquid’s potential hazard. Dr. Effland, prepare samples for gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis. Dr. Newton, reheat last night’s enchiladas, we’re going to be here for a while.”

Under the crisp laboratory light and with the precision demanded by scientific method, the team took their tasks with single-minded purpose. To counteract the effects of what they now called Liquid X, they must first apprehend what the liquid was. In accordance with heightened safety protocols, Dr. Courtney mandated the use of military issue MOPP (Mission Oriented Protective Posture) suits rated for full ABC (Atomic, Biological, Chemical) integrity. Dr. Effland was the first to report his findings, “The GC quantification assay confirms early suspicions. The primary component is water with a mineral profile of 59 ppm Ca, 8 ppm Mg,  89 ppm SO4, 63 ppm Cl, with residual alkalinity of -47 ppm as CaCO3. The presence of cyclopentyl methanol, 2-acetylpyridine, and trimethylpyrazine at levels roughly 5% of their flavor thresholds indicate the use of malted cereal grains in Liquid X’s production. Additionally, X presents numerous esters well below thresholds: ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, and ethyl hexanoate. Beyond doubt, indicative of fermentation, most likely by saccharomyces pastorianus. By all evidence, this is beer. Chemically speaking. I mean, if it walks like a duck …”

“Yet, it does not quack like a duck, Dr. Effland. It is vital we reserve judgment until we have explored every avenue before us. We have, at this point, determined what is present in Liquid X; let us now turn our attention to what is not present.” Dr. Sandy Brewer turned her gaze toward the Erlenmeyer flask containing the curious Liquid X. “There is something missing that inclines me to not affirm this as beer. Something vital; elemental …”

The team regarded each other with nervous contemplation as Dr. Newton burst into the lab with his own, tragic, discovery: “Someone ate the leftover enchiladas! And the plums that were in the icebox that I was saving for breakfast!”
